One year I did the “winter gardening”, which consisted of filling my porch with seeds in ventillated containers, exposed to the elements and freezing temps. It looked rather unsightly but I admit, by spring, I had the most robust seedlings! It was a great success!

I have read about it, but never did it. We did have someone who tried it, and kept us posted one winter. Can’t remember who it was though.

I would LOVE to try that, setting seedlings out in the winter, but I have the dang deer coming right up under my windows to graze, so anyplace I put something like that, they'll just get eaten off. I have a deck too high for the deer, but it's in the prevailing winds with no protection, so it often has 30 mph or higher winds, which isn't even conducive to plants in the summer.

How was the productivity ?
Heirlooms or hybrids ?
Do you believe the plants were 'hardier' as a result ?
That's an interesting experiment.. Where did you gt the idea ?

I tried looking up winter gardening but it addresses green houses, lights, cold frames etc.

That is not feasible for us at the moment.

But I’m interested in the starting seeds in before the winter thing.

How does that work more specifically? Do I sow them just like I would in the spring and just leave the pots outside for the winter and let nature take its course in the spring?
