Often winds over the pass top 120mph. While also snowing.
Looks like Mich., Ill., Wisc., and Minn. are mean to their peeps. http://drivinglaws.aaa.com/tag/studded-tires/
I still remember a day 30 years ago at Northstar when it was thigh deep and snowing so hard that you couldn’t see your tracks from the previous run when you rode back to the top. I had always had trouble in powder until that day.
I had Fischer slalom skis and they were riding mostly on the packed snow underneath all that powder. People thought I was a wizard because I could do anything I wanted in that deep stuff.
From that point on I realized the secret to powder skiing is to keep your weight centered on the balls of your feet and let the skis find their depth. Before that I had always been leaning back and fighting the skis, wearing myself out. With my weight centered, there is far less effort and I can go all out all day long.
Got some massive cold coming late next week. They are claiming possibly the coldest start to a new year in recorded history. For the entire lower 48.
The forecast is still evolving. Looks like the Reno valley will get at least a foot of snow by the end of next week.
That pretty unusual for you guys, eh?

It happens. Maybe ‘mad_as_he$$’ remembers a few years back, before we moved here, they had an “inside slider” around Christmas/New Years that dumped a few feet of snow in town. I’m thinkin’ in the ‘05 time frame.
A foot is a lot especially when it looks like it not going to melt quickly due to the cold.
The last thing I heard about the water allocations from the CO River is CA has first dibs and will ultimately decide which I think is pure BS but that’s just way it is right now. CA can pull water from the ocean to desalinate it; that’s not an option for NV, AZ, or UT.
I agree L.A. should deduct the 5 million or so illegals from the number they use to determine the number of people served by river and the dam for electricity but they won’t. There’s also a symbiotic relationship between L.A. and L.V. Lots of people go back and forth for work and/or play and family or just to get out of town to another sister sin city type place. Both places are all about money.
You got it about right.
The problem is..those allocations were agreed upon prior to the present population...way WAY prior.
Heck, it wasnt long ago that CA gave up the control of that Dam. Funny thing though..they dont draw water out of the Colorado till the Parker Dam-Lake Havasu. So, the Hoover hasnt anything to do with it other than power.
AZ has the longest continuous shorline with the Colorado other than maybe Utah.
Vegas and Palm Springs are two places that need to reduce their draw out of that River. Waste the water hand over foot. How many 18 hole golf courses at Palm Springs now? Vegas isnt any better. That is why I believe if they reduce the draw for Vegas, we might see some of those Cusinos beat a track to Laughlin and Reno. Laughlin/Bullhead City just announced more flights comming into the airport from a major airlines. I guess AA is to start flying into there.
But like you said..money talks and BS walks.
Everytime I go by the Donner Pass I feel a bit peckish....
That storm in 04-05 was a nasty one. I had to fire up the tractor to plow our street.
This am - thin inch on the deck. Gone now. 41 degrees.
