The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
The garden looks very pretty with the winter rye. I'm continuing to harvest a handful of cherry tomatoes every day from the vines that I brought in.
Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.
Pinging the List.
We have 7 new papaya trees that are about 4 feet high that are starting to bare. They are such pretty plants.
Unless I get a green house, I can not grow them. Papaya fruit is very helpful to digestion, especially for older people.
We've had several snowfalls, so nothing is growing outside ('tis the season of dead things) - but we are still pulling red tomatoes out of the paper bag in the garage, although that is petering out.
On the bright side, our chickens are still giving us three eggs a day (but those girls are so spoiled).
We talk about getting some hens now and then, but we also don’t want to mess with them during cold weather, so we don’t. It also is a potential violation of subdivision rules against “noxious” animals.
Got down into the high 30s on Humboldt Bay last night but everything was done here anyway. The vetch cover crop and the garlic are established look very nice.
I need to check my lettuce under the row covers and the Rosemary. Since I’ve never been able to keep rosemary going indoors, I’m trying it outdoors under row cover this year.
I’m hoping to have salad from the garden at Christmas time.
Thanks for the pics. Very nice looking arrangements.
I am afraid my days of growing papaya and mango are over.
Oh Well.
Well, I have never been able to enjoy that privilege-but I can grow green bell peppers, and tomatoes in front of the patio door. So I’m thankful for that. LOL
Now I am “Queen of the Herb Garden” LOL!
LOL. Lots of healthy benefits for herbs.
I forgot to mention on your last post I had a presentation from a fellow “avocational” archaeologist about his growing of Maize over many years, seeded from an ancient cave in the southwestern region. I wish I had recorded it. He brought several ears. It was as if wheat was grown on a cob, far different from modern corn. It was fascinating hearing him describe his attempts over the years with pollen socks and such.
That’s interesting.
We need to wrap our bee hives for the winter. Decided to let them keep the honey they made in the supers.
My Mother joined my Father and her folks on Thanksgiving Day. She made it to 93. A good run for a Grand Lady!
Not much to say. Weather still too warm to plant my daffy bulbs. Despite colder weather, the impatience soldiers on but I must pull them up because I need their space for other plants. Lavender flowering nicely and I have a steady supply of arugula.
We have three Christmas palms growing in our beach house/sun room. The seeds were picked up last January along a canal in North Fort Myers where we visited for a week.
They’re about 6 inches tall with four-five leaves each.
I had 94 days WITHOUT rain, but over the past several days, finally got some; about 2+ inches! More on the way.
Hopefully, the Southeast drought is over. Of course, we’re also going to get hit with an unusually deep cold blast, but heck, even snow is wet!
