Why Are We Always Wrong About Russia? (By Reagan's most trusted Cold War advisor)
Speech to World Affairs Council, Washington ^ | May 16, 2001 | Suzanne Massie

Posted on 11/23/2016 12:08:06 PM PST by GoldenState_Rose

I have been studying, working and going to Russia for 34 years. From the beginning I was lucky enough to meet and get to know a wide variety of Russians. During these many years whenever I went, it was always apparent that what I saw and heard was often diametrically different from both the official and the journalistic perception in the United States. I came to call it my worm’s eye view. The more I studied Russian history and culture the more I saw that the picture was always far more nuanced and complex than the judgments often characteristic of the American approach to affairs Russian. Today I can offer some glimpses -- but the most important thing is the question itself.

A Russian proverb says: Ignore history you lose an eye. Forget history you lose two eyes...

Excellent read and incredibly relevant today as new administration takes shape.

” what I saw and heard was often diametrically different from both the official and the journalistic perception in the United States”

That is because the journalistic perception and the journalistic reporting of Russia has been generally wrong for 100 years.

I have *0* confidence in Mittens to creating a “ realistic” policy toward Russia.*0*

Suzanne Massie might help in implementing a Trump normalization of relations with Russia, there is no good reason not to.

“Trust, but Verify: Reagan, Russia, and Me” is the book she recently wrote. And there is footage of of her on YouTube.

Also wrote “Land of the Firebird”

The Trump team might read if you send your concerns? Worth a shot?

In fairness it was Romney who correctly identified Russia as a ‘geopolitical threat’ back in 2012 and then the Democrats ridiculed him for it.

The spring of 2014 proved him right.

I am not a fan of this man but I also can’t argue that he was right about Russia.

I’d prefer someone like Sarah Palin as Secretary of State...or else Chuck Norris...but I guess Romney will have to do.

Until we [USA] get more economic stability and power, we’ll remain in an Obama cold war with Russia. Past is prologue.

At least Romney was against the New Start missile treaty.

Might as well do ritual suicide before investing in Russia. It is a oligarchy that will royally screw you over the moment you become a success. They have screwed over resource companies the most.

I say screw the Russian people. They put a KGB man in power. They made their nasty bed, so they can live with it. I also don’t believe for one instant that Russia is more spiritual. Abortion rates are massive in Russia.

15-20 years ago, Russians overran NYC buying up apartments, shopping at stores, eating at restaurants and buying citizenships. Arrogant, ill-clothed, rude and with too much money but no taste. The women all reminded me of Raisa Gorbachev and the guys had all the charm of Putin.

I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key.

Interesting. I hear sad story after sad story of men picking up women from Russia, who are just using them to get to the US or Canada, and dump them the first chance they get. They think they are these sweet “obedient” women, but that turns out to be the furthest from the truth.

I seriously hope someone at the Pentagon or CIA understands Russia better than the average Journalist.
Maybe only first generation immigrants who fled from Soviet/Russia can truly understand.

Yes the country is one of enormous contradictions and demons don’t die quietly, but spiritually, there is so much potential for renewal.

Beautifully written and true. I have worked with several Russians who left before and during the fall of the Soviet Empire. They have provided me a stunning view on reality as they see it. They are the most patriotic and religious Americans I know. Every time America got something “wrong” regarding Russia I heard all about it. I have to say there was a lot of substance to their logic and I often wondered just who the leaders in our country were listening to.
