The President of Oklahoma Wesleyan University gave a lecture to students theyll never forget. Recently a student complained about a sermon that made him feel guilty and blamed the school for making students feel uncomfortable. This is not uncommon. Many universities now are so afraid of offending even one student, that political correctness has run amuck. However, this University is based on religion and so one would expect that discipline, good character and personal accountability would be a big part of the curriculum.

Good to hear. Maybe more will follow suit.
Color me cynical that any college these days chooses to address the PC mentality head-on...
Can one student be interpreted to mean politically correct privileged student?
It always cracks me up when I hear “teachers” tell students to study hard or you will not be able to go to college.
I let them tell my kids that ( I want my kids to get good grades of course), but it just makes me laugh.
I view colleges as places that would beg my children to go to them.
I’m the customer, and if you want ANY of my money, or my child’s money, you better get on your hands and news and recruit us to go there.
I tell my son all of the time, don’t buy into, colleges are a dime a dozen.

BTTT!
“It always cracks me up when I hear teachers tell students to study hard or you will not be able to go to college.”
Me, too. College is a joke. The coursework has been dumbed down so far as to make college nothing more than an expensive participation trophy. Too bad participation is required by those that received their plastic trophies so everyone else has to go too.
I hope that changes soon. I am doing my part by not requiring a degree for most positions I hire. For those positions that need a degree, a Doctorate is the minimum since it is the only level of degree that requires students to know how to identify facts and write at an academic level.
“College is a JOKE.” True, but it ain’t funny any more.
As far as I’m concerned, they are now INDOCTRINARIUMS.
And paying off a college loan debt that is the equivalent of the price of a new home means, you don’t have the money to buy a new home until you are too old to enjoy it.

so many colleges are nothing but baby-sitting service centres
there ARE still a few fine colleges which are worth sending your kids to......places where they will learn and places which will help them Grow Up
just not very often the ‘prestigeous’ or most visible schools, is all
ps: I am sick and tired of hearing all the crying about ‘student debt’....student debt is VOLUNTARILY incurred...
nobody is forced at gunpoint to run up big student debts...
and
it is mostly unnecessary anyway (there being so many taxpayer-subsidized colleges and such massive student aid these days)
some student debt is understandable, and a good investment
but running up any student debt for a “degree” in Crybaby Arts or GenderBending PseudoSciences or , shudder!, “community organizing” (AKA: Communist Revolutionary Activism)
those kinds of useless or dysfunctional ‘degrees’ will NOT make your little rug rats EMPLOYABLE
so if you let them run up big “student debts” for those kinds of “degrees”.....at least have the decency to stop complaining about what you did to your children. We don’t wanna hear it.
thank you.
Wrong. If the curriculum doesn’t teach then attending will not produce what you claim.
yours:
“Our job in all of this, as you state, is to give guidance and values of character and and integrity to our children and their children, so they will develop their own, well-founded institutions and zeitgeist. “
mine:
Then many colleges (including many sucking at the taxpayers’ teat)... are failing ... massively failing...
At long last someone articulates how I feel about student debt. The idiots take out all that money and basically drown themselves in debt and don’t even build anything resembling work experience. I am sick of being told I have to feel sorry for those who throw away four valuable years on partying and ‘finding themselves.’
Indeed. Many students manage to “find themselves” (I’m overwhelmed with comments but I’ll resist resist resist haha )...... while taking courses that prepare them for employment upon graduation. I’m tired of being told we have to pay for those students who waste four or five years on some sort of useless self-centered Easter egg hunt
What a dopey comment.
I am tired of the idea that it’s the job of everyone to pave the road of the university graduates with gold and guarantees. That somehow they should have a good job immediately waiting for them, with a salary of their choosing, and how it should all be laid out for them at the time and expense of everyone around them. Too many middle class kids want to live lives of heirs/heiresses and basically have their way paid.
*Too much owed? Paid by the taxpayers.
*Too unskilled? Training paid for by the company and time taken by the boss to guide their idiot selves.
*Too lazy? The company is supposed to teach them how to have a work ethic.
I am sick of how this nation is supposed to drop everything and hurriedly hod their hands and lift them on our shoulders so they can continue on blithely going about their safe space business while the rest of us deal with our own burdens and our own goals/American dream. That is why I am not at all sympathetic over the debt crisis as well.
