Tourists in Indonesia ignored instructions to flee an erupting volcano so they could continue taking photos, the country’s disaster agency has said.
Mount Barujari, part of the Mount Rinjani National Park on the island of Lombok, erupted without warning last Tuesday, ejecting a column of ash two kilometres into the sky that subsequently delayed flights to and from nearby Bali.
Indonesia’s Disaster Mitigation Agency quickly moved to evacuate the 1,023 tourists, including 639 foreigners, that were in the park at the time. It claims, however, that many refused to leave the mountain, in some cases even hiding from officials, so they could continue taking pictures.

If you’re using instagram that selfie could be all over the world just before the pyroclastic flow melts you into a goo. Your friends will be soooo jealous!
I was in a hotel once. I was leaving because there was a smoke and I figured there was a fire.
There were people banging on the elevator button to go up to their rooms. Over 100 people died in that hotel fire, some in the elevators. Maybe some of those who decided to ignore the smoke.
They had to be Japanese.....

Finally, I figured out that I was a young father with two little girls (then) and wasn't being paid to risk my life for stupid people. So I gave up, went back to the office, locked myself in and periodically made announcements on the loud speaker which, while it had little effect, at least warned them.
(1) It's not fair! The evil conservative volcano targeted these tourists just because they were ________. (Fill in the blank.)
(2) This just goes to show that we need a new federal Department of Tourist Protection. It might cost billions, but if it saves only one life...
