I was expecting her to have approached an actual clown.

What was he going to do? Run him over with that little car full of other clowns? Beat him to death with a big floppy shoe?

Detectives reached out to the teacher to make sure they were OK..
It’s a good thing the teacher “were” ok.
Ah, journalism these days.

Social conditioning: the detectives needed the approval of a teacher to affirm the okayness of their investigation.

Detectives reached out to the teacher to make sure they were OK.I must have missed something; was there more than one teacher or is this just another poorly written sentence by a "professional" journalist?
Yikes.

Why did she want to kill the teacher. Didn’t say if teacher was male or female. Could the teacher have made illicit advances to this young girl. The story seems incomplete ( besides sing poorly written).

A 13-year-old Hampton girl is in police custody for allegedly reaching out to a person on social media to kill one of her teachers. Cant we just drone this guy? Clinton openly inquired, offering a simple remedy to silence Assange and smother Wikileaks via a planned military drone strike, according to State Department sources.

I thought the same thing at first, but they is an acceptabe usage per APA writing guidelines when the object is to not identify the subject by gender. My guess is the author was trying to keep the teacher’s identity anonymous.

Excuse me if there were many teachers it would be were, but since it is 1 teacher it should be was. Is the journalist a racial hire?

Not a clown. The media is now pushing the idea that clowns are dangerous. Just in time for halloween.

APA does not recommend replacing "he" with "he or she," "she or he," "he/she," "(s)he," "s/he," or alternating between "he" and "she" because these substitutions are awkward and can distract the reader from the point you are trying to make. The pronouns "he" or "she" inevitably cause the reader to think of only that gender, which may not be what you intend. To avoid the bias of using gendered pronouns: Rephrase the sentence Use plural nouns or plural pronouns - this way you can use "they" or "their" In this situation, the word "they" is correct, as it applies to the implied plural for "he or she", keeping the potential victim anonymous.

Excuse me if there were many teachers it would be were, but since it is 1 teacher it should be was. Is the journalist a racial hire? By using the word "they" (to avoid using "he" or "she" in referring to the teacher), the reporter painted himself (or herself) into a corner. That is the real cause of the grammar problem.

OK...I see what you’re saying. It seems like it was poorly written and other people were commenting on it, too. Sorry.
