Oh no, no need to be sorry, it rubbed me the wrong way as well. But then I remembered all those papers I had to write for school in the APA style format, and I got dinged a few times for assuming gender or using contractions (both big no-nos) when writing case studies.

I'm no journalisto lover, in fact, I think they are all closet Marxists (some blatant); just thought I'd post about something I know about for a change, as trivial as having knowledge about APA format is LOL.

I hate the modern usage “reached out to” and will be happy when it fades away. In this context, it sounds especially stilted and stupid.

I agree. A less colloquial and more effective sentence could have been, "Detectives performed a wellness check to ensure the teacher's safety."

Particularly stupid was the 13 year old girl “reaching out to” an online clown for a hit on her teacher.
