The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Little cherry tomatoes are the bright spot this year and keep on producing. Corn should be close to harvest. The larger tomatoes are slower than molasses.
Primary care Doc opinion is that circulation in feet is good, and problem is neuropathy. The pills that are typically used are not any that I am interested in taking unless it gets lots worse. So comfort measures for heated rice sock etc.
Pinging the list.
I have some sort of peppers this year. They were supposed to be bell peppers but are not. They look like a cross between a bell and banana pepper but are smaller than either bells or banana peppers. They turn bright red but are fairly mild and really good in lots of things.
I may save some seeds
They sound like good eating to me. I’d agree that saving some seeds is worth the effort.
Cross pollinated seeds from last year?
Went to the Clinton “agricultural” Fair this afternoon ...went early to see the crop winners...ya know 1st,2nd etc,....garlic looked nice , some who have endless water grew some big Tom’s....corn is getting/has been in areas getting harvested...saw some great Clydesdales...huge horses...
Clinton Maine
Two Tomatoes.
Two Cucumbers.
One of Me.
I guess that works. :-)
I’ve killed so many plants this year. My thumb is not green.
I’d like some advice on peppers. I have 3 pepper plants and they all look like they are about to bud (They actually have buds) but then they stop. Nothing happens. I have not a single pepper this year.
My 3 tomato plants have yielded a single tomato this year. I’m getting them green and then some bug invades and they go. Or when I touch the tomatoes they just fall right off the stem. Delicate little buggers.
I’m now just focusing on the winter-time hydroponics build.. And kinda calling this another wasted, frustrating year. And I’m getting frustrated.
The seeds were from a package bought at Home Depot. I think they were simply packaged wrong. I have no idea what they are but they are good
I love to see those horses.
Better than nothing I guess, but bound to be disappointing.
Have you tested your soil?
If the electric goes off one more time this evening, I’m calling it quits till tomorrow.
My herbs are great though.
Well, that’s good.
More wet weather this week in Central Missouri. Close to 4” of rainfall at my place since Wednesday, and the weather guessers are calling for up to 3” more overnight.
The pond had just gotten dry enough to start working on it. Now it’s full of water. Again. Ugh.
It seems to me that you have been fighting the rains with respect to that pond for several years. I think I would be very discouraged by now.
We started seeds that were advertized as ‘bells” but turned out to be cylindrical, not too hot, medium-think peppers like Hungarians.
We’ve had them in an onion mix with brats. Good.
I had the opposite happen here. I planted extra tomatoes this year then got sick for an extended period. I lost control of them and they all grew together into one gigantic massive mess of tomatoes. I can’t even get into them to pick them. Seriously overgrown ridiculous garden this year. And now with homeschooling up and running again, I’m having a hard time even getting out there to pick stuff. I MUST go out this weekend and get as many peppers as I can salvage and get them into the freezer. I might try to get to the tomatoes and see if I can get some of them processed.
I have learned a few new lessons this year and will try again next year! Weed control has been my biggest challenge. The grass just really wants to come back despite turning and turning and turning that soil. I think we’ll cover it this winter with something to help deter growth next spring. No winter gardens for us this year, either. I’m busy making soap and sewing things for a craft fair coming up in October. No time for the green thumb!
