A friend was working in the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Emergency Room, when a drugie BROKE the handcuffs!
YES, INTO TWO SEPARATE CUFFS!!!
The coppers used billy clubs.
The escapee did not survive the event.
My buddy was in the room when this happened.

Twist so the links jam against each other and you can get leverage. When I worked in corrections I carried hinged cuffs, harder to break and if you got one on, you could apply force unlike the chain and swivel type.
