Warning... (OPAQUE MELODIES THAT WOULD BUG MOST PEOPLE)
As a lifelong musician who has always been into stuff that's a little out of the ordinary I thought I'd post this wonderful instrumental from Frank Zappa from the album "Chunga's Revenge" released in Oct 1970. Great album from my extensive collection. One of my many favs from FZ.
Enjoy... Or don't it's completely up to you.
That was a great guitar jam. Zappa was wizard.
I was listening to some opaque melodies a little earlier as well — Bartok’s SQs.
I love how his guitar work completely carries the entire song, never letting up for a moment. Awesome really.
There used to be a Zappa Ping list here if I remember correctly but I don’t remember who was doing it.
Hey, have you ever heard of the "Aquarium Rescue Unit" with Jimmy Herring?
How about Col. Bruce Hampton who has seen countless musical incarnations (the above band being just one)?
Weird can be fun...
Vote Trump!
Thanks! Frank was a friend of mine. Not close, but we had a blast when we were together!
Not with me he's not and never has been. Truly one of the greatest of all time, IMO.
Zappa’s old buddy Don Van Vilet, aka Captain Beefheart:

Blues jam with a Vilet edge, live footage, ‘68.
Alex St Clair on slide, another of Zappa’s old crew. All three of them met at Antelope Valley HS.
The Captain played a mean harp.
I love that album, and that song, it’s also in my collection. I bought it way back when it was first released.
That’s Capt Beefheart AKA Don Van Vliet on vocals on that song. He was a friend of FZ in the very early days before they were famous back in Lancaster CA. You probably already knew that.
Capt Beefheart is really in my top three favorite artists of all time. Saw Capt Beefheart and his magic band at a little club in Manhattan beach Calif called The golden Bear way back in the day. Awesome show. Sure brings back some great memories.
lol....Vilet was speaking to us at the same time from the Ether.
I’m a huge fan of Beefheart myself. His early albums were amazing. Never saw him live, but I sat next to him at a Miles Davis concert at the Beverly Theater in ‘83 or ‘84 and we talked a little.
You’re lucky you saw him.
I really really loved the original Mothers of Invention!
Kinda wish Zappa didn’t grow tired of them or whatever so we could have heard what else that crew would have come up with.
FZ did great stuff with the Fowler brothers and those other guys but I always think what maybe might have been with the original ‘mothers’
The best Zappa and Beefheart albums were from the ‘67 - ‘73 period.
But that holds true from most rock music, imo.
You’re lucky you met him, wow! Very interesting guy.
When I saw Beefheart it was at a little nightclub and we were seated maybe 25 ft or so from the stage. The music put me into kind of a trance. My mouth must have just hung open for 90 minutes or so. I remember just being speechless at the amazing sound of what they were playing... LOL.
The great Denny Walley was playing the slide guitar with the band that night. A night I’ll never forget.
I remember the first time I tore into Beefheart’s “Safe as Milk” album. His very first.
I was hooked for life.
Trout Mask gets most of the glory, but Milk is my favorite. Rooted in the blues.
Hmmm.. I guess I have to do this again. Thought I had posted, I don’t see it now...rats...
Somebody mentioned Jethro Tull?
Farm on the Freeway, from Crest of a Knave, everything on it is great.

I love Zappa but never listened to a lot, just the Apostrophe album mostly, love that one...
Oops...wrong thread, no wonder...OK I’ll go back to sleep...
The original Mothers would not have been able to do the stuff on Roxy and Elsewhere. FZ would chew through a drummer in a few minute audition during that period and was an unforgiving perfectionist band leader. You said it well. FZ just outgrew the original Mothers.
Agreed
