WINNIPEG — For years, people in the tiny northern Manitoba community of Norway House Cree Nation gossiped and whispered about why David Tait Jr. and Leon Swanson didn’t look much like their parents.
Now, the two men — born just days apart in the same remote community’s hospital — are devastated after learning that they’ve called the wrong people their family for decades after apparently being switched at birth.

One would think that a prudent hospital would run a quick DNA test on the baby and mother in every case. These types of tests could be contracted and given some reasonable response time. After the DNA tests are confirmed a more sturdy, non-removable (easily) bracelet could be attached to the baby.
Find the smart@$$, commie lib racial agitator, OR the surly, resentful “native Canadian” who worked in the hospital at the time and would have gotten pleasure from seeing an indian child reared as caucasian and vice-versa, and you’ll have the culprit who switched them.
I think they were both native. I can’t imagine that NOW they are using identity bracelets given immediately after the birth. Good grief, like that’s rocket science?
Very sad for these men. If it winds up giving everyone involved extra people to love, then it may have a silver lining.
Science not available in 1975. No such thing as a DNA test back then.
I understand that. I was really talking more now of a process that wouldn’t cost much that would forestall this kind of thing in the future.
Well, if they SWITCHED the babies, that’s two misplacements at the same time!
The incident happened decades ago, before easy DNA testing.
However, it's SUPPOSED to be the case that babies footprints (unique as fingerprints) are taken before they leave the delivery room.
Understood all that. I’m just saying better practice, that’s all. Maybe more semi-permanent wrist bands or the like.
Thinking back to when my son was born in 1983—the hospital staff was so careful to avoid mixing him up with any other baby. They put matching wrist/ankle bands on us before leaving the delivery room. Whenever they would bring him to my room, they would ask if I could identify him as my baby, and physically check the matching wrist/ankle bands.
Since the only other baby in the hospital at that time was a girl, I’m pretty sure I would have recognized a mix-up even without the matching wrist/ankle bands.
Maybe this is the ruse they will use to begin taking DNA from every child when born. Obamacare failed miserably in setting up the national citizen database so maybe this will be next. Have to stay one step ahead of the ba$tard$...

Reminds me of the Jim Carey movie, Me, Myself, and Irene, and the scene where he is playing a video game on the couch with his 3 “sons”.

That IS a danger I had not considered.
There was a “Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction” story that had woman and her fiancé discover they had been switched with each other on a stormy confused night 25 years before. It was labeled as fact.
Of course it is “Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction” so take it with a huge grain of salt.
At present we have one of the most corrupt, unethical, and ou of control governments that looks to personal identification technology and the criminal and civil infraction systems as a means to generate revenue. They create a law in order to penalize you then use their automated systems to fine thousands (red light / speeding cameras, tool booth) of people by tagging their license plates. No way in hell am I going to let them tag me by taking a DNA sample, inputting into a database then letting them placing an invisible tattoo on my body so they can tag me for every new infraction they can create a law for.
Yes this is where I believe the soialist utopia is headed if we don't do our duty to civilly disobey and rebel against the overlords.

Happened to my mom when she was an infant. The hospital tried to send my grandma home with the wrong baby. She caught it right away and raised the roof.

I don’t know about civilian hospitals, but over the ten year span when my mom was having her kids in military hospitals, they attatched a sturdy, non-removable band around the baby’s ankle, and a matching band on the mom’s wrist.
Old school low tech, and worked like a charm.
