“Humpbacks are marine mammals and you need to stay back 100M. As you can see in this Video they can close the distance very fast and they are unpredictable.

Wow

It’s my experience Humpbacks will sometimes breach to let you know where they are at, one breach is visible for miles and helps to know where they are.

Not always but quite often.

I have had one come right up next to me when I was in a 22 foot sailboat. A bit south of here in the San Juan Islands of Washington. It’s very impressive and a bit puckering...Hillary would need another shipment of Depends.

That was just AWESOME!
After she was free, she was breaching with what seemed like pure joy!
Thanks so much for posting this!
One of my favorite things up here in Maine is to go on the whale watching cruises out of Boothbay Harbor.

Here’s a link if anyone is interested!

Watching that I asked myself, “Self, why do those humpback whales do that—breach?”
And it came to me ... because like a bulldog licking himself, they do it because they can—for the sheer joy of it.

I have seen whales migrating in SoCal from a small boat, and in Maui from the shore

Pretty awesome, each time

I had one emerge about 50 yards off the starboard in Yakutat bay. Scared hell out of us the 3 of us in a 16 foot bay boat. On another occasion that I didn’t witness, one upended a small boat and hypothermia came close to killing two people.
