“Oatmeal cut by steel is better for you than another kind?”

I am glad you asked that question. My daughter keeps telling me to buy steel cut oats and every time I ask her why she gives me this look like I am crazy. I bet she doesn’t have a clue what they are.

It is said that everybody should walk 10,000 steps a day but most don't come close to that. If you commute to work in a car and have an office job, chances are you are only walking 3,000 to 4,000 steps a day. And not quality steps as most of them are short spurts. You need to walk at least 20 full minutes at a brisk clip before you start realizing benefit.

I find the sweet spot for losing/maintaining weight is around 18,000 steps a day. If I walk at least that much, I don't worry too much about what I'm eating because I know I'm burning it off.

I used to strap a pedometer to my hip but I use the iPhone to track my steps now. Much more accurate. So far today, I've logged 17,000 steps. Visited a client in Greenwich Village this morning and walked all the way uptown to my 48th Street office. I walked a good mile or so to the subway on the way down there instead of grabbing the station closest to me. That's how you get the steps in even if you have an office job.

I think the steel cut ones taste better. Better texture.

Here is one I used to do when I was home. I would have two gallon water jugs and a heavy box. Commercial comes on I curl the two jugs for a minute, push the box for a minute then do sit ups until the show came back on.

“The difference is that rolled oats are much softer and thinner and digest faster, which can cause a blood sugar spike.”

Well thank you,I was unaware of that.

I despise hot oatmeal cereal, always have, but I use Quaker Oats for cookies and meatloaf.

I knew a guy at a former job (he was an IT consultant / project manager type) who went to Eastern Europe for a consulting gig for a year.

He drank three beers a day and still managed to lose 30 lb. by walking everywhere.

“I kept an appropriate body shape by working for my food.”

That was you at the end of the freeway off ramp holding that sign?

“If you read the story, you’ll find that he bought the food at Walmart then walked back to cook and eat it....”

Thanks for the summary. This is the type of story where I just read the headline for a giggle.
I figure if a person turns himself into a super-huge whale (and it’s not caused by a disease or the like), he’s got a problem than can’t be solved with a trick, he has to make a permanent mental change.

“It’s amazing because I never walked six miles in my life...”

Not really surprised that he weighed 600 pounds.

I’ll have it cold (Instant variety) from the box for breakfast some morns with milk, a sugar sub and cinnamon.

Must be, otherwise why would they charge more for it? :)

My doctor told me to walk six miles a day. A month later I called him and told him I was 180 miles away!
