About a week after the Rindone family returned from their tropical summer vacation, 7-year-old Andrew started complaining about a bump on his head.
"It did hurt a little," Andrew said. "And, it did itch."
The boy's pediatrician thought he had an infection and prescribed antibiotics.
But the bump just kept getting bigger, and a small pinhole began to appear.
Then one day, Andrew was on the couch when his mother saw something that horrified her.
"We kind of noticed something peek out of the hole," Jennifer Rindone said. The small opening was apparently a breathing hole for the larvae growing under Andrew's scalp.

Andrew's mother said she screamed when she saw what was living under her son's scalp. The doctor admitted he had never seen anything like it.
Andrew said suddenly he was very popular at the hospital.
"About six to eight doctors came into the room ... and partied with the botfly, looking at the botfly, taking pictures," Andrew said.

In our backyard half the squirrels have a large tumor on them and then by Sept it will be gone and healing up. Bot fly. People get it too sometimes.
I can’t think of anywhere I’ve been that is free of bot flies (screw worm, etc) or their maddening first cousins the horse/deer fly. Just some urban areas have fewer numbers. I think that in my youth, nits/no see’ms half blinded me and set up camp in my nose. Regular bandanas give little relief. ‘
Or maybe just stay the heck out of some Third World pest hole.

Oh yeah there is. Had it at least three times. One arm shot, week later the other. Don't plan on using the arm for a couple of days.
Them days I don’t think we owned a vacuum cleaner ... we didn’t even have flush toilets (we did lave lectricity)
plus getting the critter to stand sill while you fire up the vacuum might be a challenge
Have found them on wild rabbits frequently. YUUUUUK!
Sorry! cows, cats and rabbits have been known to get them in MI. And we’re “norther” than you.

That sounds a lot more user-friendly than I was envisioning.
In Costa Rica they use the ever popular suicide showers!
“So here’s my technique: Bring two towels to the shower. While still dry, adjust the water pressure to get a decently warm temperature. Hop in the shower, do your thang and avoid thinking about things like wills, funerals and barbecues. And for God’s sake, don’t touch anything.”

Interesting! I never heard of a plague vaccine before. And I am a professional vaccine expert, I get paid to know this stuff.
Although, from what I can find on Google about it, it looks like the plague vaccine is only administered under very limited circumstances. I guess going somewhere where they barbecue potentially plague infected groundhogs is not one of those circumstances.

My best friend died in my arms of a massive aneurysm in an open helicopter over an erupting volcano in Hawaii.
I suppose it could have happened anywhere, but it kind of spoiled Hawaii for me when considering future vacations.
