I went to Costa Rica on a tour once. The trip was shortened because I stepped on a nail in a small board, hidden by the sand on the beach. I punctured the exact soft spot on my foot between the heel and the ball of the foot.
We had a retired nurse on the trip and she helped me.
On her advice I left that tour the next day and it took me three days to get home.
Everyone was VERY nice, especially since I spoke Spanish so I have fond memories of Costa Rica....sorta.
“How do you use paper to heat the air in the bottle?”
You roll it up, light it, and hold it inside the bottle or cup.
Then while it is burning you place it against the skin?
Stick the burning paper in the bottle ... invert and press firmly over the larva... it will suck that puppy right out
In Chinese cupping the practitioner usually uses a small ball of cotton with some alcohol on it placed on the end of a stick. You light the cotton on fire, hold it inside the cup for a few seconds and remove it. The cup is then placed on the skin before the inside has a chance to cool.
Rip tides and Maggots under scalp = Apples and Naranjas
Go see Alligators at Disney
It is really very effective for a number of things. Don't let a young good looking novice masseuse who doesn't know how long to keep the flame in the cup work on you. It hurts. A lot!
Or they could climb down off their high-horse and consult with a vet. Cow have them all of the time. That is why insecticide was developed.
“Then while it is burning you place it against the skin?”
No. You hold it in, heat the air, which expands. You then take the taper out and put the cup against the skin.

“The family still recommends Costa Rica as a vacation destination but warns travelers to use insect repellent and to cover up from head to toe...”
Yep, that’s the way to spend a vacation .... why not just spend your vacation at the South Pole in the winter, just for the fun in the sun!!!!!
Wouldn’t a vacuum cleaner work just as well?
The newer ones generate a lot of suction power.
Do tell. Such as?
The typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. It is from 50% to 80% effective during the first year after vaccination, and the efficacy drops after that.
It is not a matter of resistance; it is the fact that it is hard to induce lasting immunity against bacteria, and there is variability in our immune systems.
I’m planning to travel soon. I’m getting interesting vaccines. Typhoid, Japanese encephalitis, rabies—I should get one of those little numbered metal tags for that one! My doctor told me that plague is a problem in one of the countries where I will be visiting, but there is no plague vaccine. So I will be covering myself in DEET, and making sure everything I eat is cooked thoroughly. I don’t want to catch something nasty when I finally visit these places that I’ve dreamed about for decades.
