Because of a derailment at the East Falls Church Metro station portions of the Orange and Silver lines will remain closed for the rest of the day.
WASHINGTON Service on parts of the Orange and Silver Lines will remain suspended through at least Saturday, following an early-morning derailment near the East Falls Church station that damaged two train cars, sent one rider to the hospital and scrambled passengers Friday morning commutes.
Service on the Silver Line between the McLean and Ballston stations and on the Orange Line between West Falls Church and Ballston will remain suspended through the end of the day Saturday, Metro announced Friday afternoon, to allow more time to investigate the incident and repair infrastructure damaged during the derailment.
Metro officials are encouraging customers to find alternative transportation.
Earlier on Friday, Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said officials were still investigating the cause of the derailment. In addition, the National Transportation Safety Board said it has dispatched two investigators to the scene to determine the need for a more extensive federal investigation.
Asked at a news conference Friday afternoon whether the ongoing cleanup and investigation at the scene of the derailment would delay the next phase of Metro SafeTrack scheduled to begin 6 a.m. Monday on parts of the Red Line, Wiedefeld said: Ill have to judge that as we go through this. Let us get through [Friday night] and see where we are [Saturday] .
The fourth and fifth cars of the outbound six-car Silver Line train derailed just east of the East Falls Church station at about 6:15 a.m. Friday, although they remained upright and in line. Officials have not said how fast the train was going.

Just imagine the turmoil if DC had two Senators (Michelle and that fast&furious gun-runner guy....)
The crime scene (and crime seen) in DC would hit new highs
What has happened to the metro in DC? For years when I visited DC I would think “boy they sure know how to do a subway system right here”. Now it’s like a series of biblical plagues are hitting it all over the last year. How did it suddenly become the crappiest subway system in existence?
I’m guessing more than one rider ended up in the hospital, they just had to see their attorney first.
I take this line many days each week.
Metro has become a death trap, wrought with bureaucracy, delays, liberalism and feral passengers.
Just imagine the cries of “racism” had it been the green line!
Same week they say they want to shut service down earlier each night, IIRC.
I used to take it too when I lived out in Merrifield...Dun Loring stop 15 years ago it starting to be a death trap then.
The train that derailed is my normal train, but I work from home on Fridays.
I tell visitors who come to DC to avoid the green line at all costs, or only use it in the immediate center of the city if you have to...never ride the green line out towards the extremities.
