The Heroic Police Officer Who Risked His Own Life to Shoot a Suicide Terrorist at Istanbul's Airport

This man is a real-life hero. Sadly, we don't yet know whether he made it out in time.

It goes without saying that we can write many terrible stories about the terror attack at Atatürk Airport in Istanbul yesterday. Dozens of people died -- at least 36, and possibly as many as 50 -- and as many as 150 innocent travellers were injured.

There is a story behind every single one of those deaths: a story that, sadly, was ended prematurely because of the actions of a few radical Muslims who hate all those who dare have different views than them.

However, there are also stories about real-life heroes: people who risked their own lives to save others. Just watch the video embedded in the tweet below:

On the footage, you see a terrorist running into Atatürk Airport. Although every single person in the vicinity of the terrorist is running away -- who can blame them? -- one lonely police officer chooses to stand his ground. He waits around a corner until the terrorist is nearby. Then he shoots.

At the moment the terrorist is shot he drops his gun. Of course, he was still carrying his suicide belt. The police officer saw that the terrorist was a suicide bomber, but still took the time to take him down. Only after he made sure that the terrorist couldn't shoot anyone anymore and had only his bomb to work with, the police officer did what everyone else did: he fled.

The explosion was tremendous. The officer undoubtedly knew this would be the case, yet he still decided to stay behind and wait for the terrorist so he could shoot him. That's pure, real heroism for you.

All my heroes have always been muslims.

I can’t help it - they’re just so noble and pure of heart.

Brave actions, but why didn’t he put a couple rounds into his head??

You can see the muslim POS moving even after he goes down.

The town of Elkader, Iowa, is named in honor of the Algerian Sufi who lead a rebellion against French colonialism. Muslim heroes indeed!

He shot the terrorist, made sure there was nothing else there, then fled. The bomb was not nearly large enough to have hurt anybody who was not directly in the area.

His action probably saved a lot of lives, I doubt anyone else but the terrorist was killed.

Muslim or not, the policeman did his job, and I am sure he lived to tell about it.

Agreed he did his job. I think he tried to pump a couple of more shots into the terrorist but then decided he better run. I doubt this explosion hurt him; however there were 2 more terrorists he could have been killed by.

He did his job, but the first thing I thought was why didn't he finish the job? He was standing right over him. He could have easily pumped a few caps into his scull before the terrorist detonated his vest.

It looked to me like the terrorists on the floor had a mechanical friction type detonator. He needed to pull a cord or something like a cord pretty far, judging by his arm movement upward, and then the explosion took about 2 more seconds.

If that is the case, if you are an armed security guard or armed citizen, you need to treat them like zombies and put some lead in their brain, instead of running away. It looks to me like it was the opposite of an electronic dead-man switch—this self-detonation took a pretty big effort by the wounded/dying terrorist. He had to roll around to find his cord, and get into a position to give it a big yank.

The security guard who ran away (if he was armed) should have shot him in the head and stopped the detonation.

In one report I heard that one of the perps blew himself up outside against a window wall to get the other guy inside. This might be the first “suicide bomb breaching” I’ve heard of. Turkish security was actually pretty good, much better than a U.S. airport, where all three suicide bombers could have been in the middle of big security lines inside of airport concourses where the blasts would be contained for much more power and effect.

One of these days they will orchestrate suicide bombers like a controlled explosion map, each bomber has a gps unit that detonates automatically when in a predetermined position and time. More than likely a simple app like facebook would work.

My bigger fear is something like the Russian jetliner blown up by a soda can bomb.

If they are mass-produced and convincingly sealed, and each includes a digital date-time watch detonator, any number of jihadists could just be told, “Be in an airplane or someplace crowded on the 4th of July at noon GMT” or whenever they are set to all explode.

My guess is the plane brought down over the Med was also a victim of a soda-can bomb.

If the explosive was by dead-man switch, then you have to wonder if there is a timer or some other way to give you time to exit. As long as the shooter/bomber is incapacitated, best to run, clear the area, and if the shooter tries to close distance, shoot him from a distance.

I have a gut feeling an attack is going to happen in a major US airport within 48 hours, like at SFO. Or MCO. Breeching the front desk areas, well before the security areas. Its the pattern.

At first, my thought was "how do you know what sort of trigger is on the bomb?" Meaning, "How can you be so sure there is no deadman switch?" But on second thought, an active shooter would not be able to maintain a deadman.

That still leaves a question of how easy, quick the trigger is; and also the possibility of a "heartbeat" type of switch, where if the switch doesn't get attention each minute (or whatever interval), the fuse is lit.

So, a gun saved many lives.

That would be the height of unlucky, to kill one, run around the corner, and find another terrorist ready to blow himself up. Not a good visual.

Electric switches with batteries have almost zero chance of getting past a metal detector, not that that would apply in this case. But the soda-can bomb on the Russian plane also had a friction-type fuse detonator, as did the shoe bomb etc.

The rolling into position and giving a long yank followed by a 2-second delay tells me it was a friction-fuse device.

No way to know in advance, of course, but if you have a chance for a head shot, TAKE IT.

Maybe with a gun only, but I think the Istanbul attack needed some infrastructure in place. Bomb makers, etc.

In the USA, it’ll probably just be a shooter going amok.

They get a twofer with a shooter, because the libs will blame the gun and the 2nd Amd.

Sounds like the odds favor that. That was what the Brits did to the Brazilian mistaken for a terrorist. Two or three to the base of the skull.
