An Australian research project has devised a way to use salt baths to boost battery life while improving performance and safety, offering the potential to create long-lasting energy storage for electric cars and electronic devices.

Researchers from the CSIRO, RMIT and the Queensland University of Technology found that a simple salt bath improved the performance of lithium batteries considerably.

Researchers Dr Adam Best, Dr Anand Bhatt and doctoral candidate Andrew Basile discovered that treating electrodes in a bath containing ionic liquids and lithium salts reduced the breakdown of the battery electrolyte during operation.

Basile told iTnews the treatment provided several advantages.

I hope that means that the older laptop I have lying about somewhere will now be able to operate for longer than 45 minutes now when I want to watch some vids or regular movies I am interested in.

Rather difficult attempting to stay no further than 45 minutes from the nearest mains outlet.

Just dunk it in the ocean for that longer lasting performance.

Will my machinery get naked and try to chew my face off?

It is probably a really good thing they are using salt baths and not bath salts.

Not possible. It self-identifies as a cat. *snicker*

Or, even worse, garlic salts! Or lox! (Oy Vey!)

"has the potental to improve batteries to a point where electric vehicle users will no longer have to fear "range anxiety".

I've always been afraid to use a range in a moving car.

I wonder if these claims are accurate or if they are hype.

We use a lot of battery powered tools at work. I am not impressed with the life of said batteries.

Any improvement would be an improvement.

Will these batteries be used along with the cold fusion devices we were promised a few years ago...the ones that were predicted to change human civilization?

Yawwwwn.

Another month goes by and another battery “breakthrough”.

None of these battery hypes ever makes it to market.

Wake me up when such an advanced battery is actually in my phone.

I hope you are right. Forming the salt of many compounds can make a more stable compound. It seems so simple, why was it not tried before??

Motorhomes have them installed by default.

The reference sources tend to corroborate it so far.

Key word: “can”. Can be used. It takes time to go through all the possibilities.

"Motorhomes have them installed by default."

That is true. In addition to ranges, Motorhomes are good for hauling bowling balls and scorpions too.

The targeted demographic of the energizer bunny. It isn’t a better battery they need.

I really hope it’s true. It would be fantastic. But I am just wary of big claims in science. I’ve read so many of them over the years that don’t ever pan out.

Some do. But they are a tiny minority of the actual claims made.
