ATLANTA — Hundreds of Atlanta cab and limo drivers showed up Wednesday at Atlanta City Hall protesting Uber and Lyft drivers picking up passengers at the Atlanta airport.

The fleet of taxis, vans, and limos gathered at Turner Field and paraded their way to downtown Atlanta, where they shut down traffic as part of their event demanding new policies. Traffic on the streets around City Hall came to a halt as the vehicles drove around the building.

Police worked to smooth traffic as cab drivers emerged from their vehicles wearing tT-shirts targeting Uber and Lyft. They also held signs reading “safety first.”

“they shut down traffic”

Ya know, it wasn’t bad enough you don’t do the cab job well and effectively.

But now you even have to make travel worse for the rest of us not calling for a ride.

Traffic gridlock in Atlanta? How would anyone know it was a protest?

Uber and Lyft are direct attacks on the revenue stream of Democrat city administrations.

They’re just (individually) pissed that it wasn’t their idea and making a difficult time (collectively) for the people who had a great idea and made it work.

I have driven both, in the “lucrative” SF market, and do not recommend driving for Uber or Lyft unless you go in with both eyes open. They lie to their drivers and cheat them. I know that a lot of regulation is bad and stupid but not all regulation is.

You should see what some of these Lyft/Uber guys post on the driver groups. As opposed to taxi drivers. There is no screening; you can drive without any background check at all just by pretending to be your cousin; and some of these guys are BAD NEWS. Buyer beware.

Yes taxi drivers can be bad, too. But there are good systems in place to keep that to a minimum

As a driver I am far better protected from abuse, injury, and death in the taxi industry than in an Uber.

Do it if you want, as a passenger or driver, but don’t think Uber and Lyft are great capitalists and taxis are socialists. Both notions are untrue; many of the regulations make good sense; keep in mind that MANY of our passengers are frail, elderly, just released from hospital, CHILDREN, and drunk. . . very vulnerable people.

I won’t let my minor girls use Uber or Lyft.

Prediction: Cities will start requiring cab driver certifications which include ‘safety’ training...CPR, defensive driving, whatever...with classes offered by the local Union at an inflated price, except for a large discount for union members. And, of course, they will classify Uber as a ‘cab’.

Given your woeful ignorance vis-a-vis Lyft’s policy on mandatory background checks, please shut up.

You may want to read his post again.

He said that it was easy to falsify your background and drive for a TNC.

Both Uber and Lyft you can leave feedback on the driver like Ebay or Amazon. You complain about a taxi driver, it remains on message, probably deleted.

The last time I used a cab was 5 years ago to LAX and he was either a moron or a scammer. You dont take the freeway..I mean, NO ONE takes the freeway from Hollywood to LAX.

My nephew started by driving for Lyft around Baltimore. Since he moved to DE he had to stick with Uber (Lyft not there). He has liked it all a good deal. Been about year and a half.

Its funny how many of these Uber Lyft drivers are unemployed or retired Americans who need money. But for some reason the taxi industry is controlled by foreigners from the Third World-—who we are told are doing the jobs Americans won’t do and enriching our nation with diversity.

Oh please. As a user of both, I've never had any problem. Drivers have ratings as do users. Bad users get booted and bad drivers get what they deserve. The cars are cleaner, drivers are better, less smelly, less creepy and they know, unlike taxi drivers, that is a business and a business that gets rewarded when they do good work.

I tend to use Lyft more because they treat their drivers better. But the scare tactics...are just that.

I'd love to understand the background check for taxi drivers as many of them are sketchy as heck!

I have used both also and have also not had any problems. However having driven for both I can say that security is definitely better for taxi - for both driver and passenger

As for the diff between security checks, taxis have to do the full Palm FBI live scan just like school teachers etc. uber/Lyft just does the easily obtained and inferior internet check.

More to the point Abdul can sign on (not so much as a personal interview) with Uber etc and then have his cousins Jefe Haram and Mohammed drive. No one will know the difference

It’s a big security issue not to mention. A perfect and frequently used ! Way for illegal aliens to work. Don’t kid yourself on that one. Which is also why many are netting out $7 to $10 per hour; they can’t get other work.
