(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either satire or opinion. Or both.)

Didn’t a player some number of years ago kill a rat with a slap-shot into the boards? The kitty obviously came out of this better than the rat did.

You are correct. It's a Detroit Red Wing's tradition going back to the "Original 6". It had something to do with the # of games to win the Stanley Cup. 🐙

If they don’t find the owner, I see a cat who has a job for life if it doesn’t mind going out on the ice during the season.

You think some ice skates can be modified for the cat to wear?

Scott Mellanby of the FL Panthers.
Glad no one tried that with the kittycat last night.

The incident that I was thinking about was quite a few years later and did involve a rat:
From wikipedia:
The rat trick is a celebration popularized by both fans of the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL) during their 199596 season and trip to the 1996 Stanley Cup Finals. The term, a play on hat trick, was coined by Panthers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck after teammate Scott Mellanby killed a rat in the locker room prior to the team's home opener with his stick, then scored two goals with the same stick. Fans immediately picked up on the idea and began throwing plastic rats on the ice to celebrate goals. By the time the Panthers reached the 1996 playoffs, thousands of rats hit the ice after every Panthers goal, resulting in an off-season rule change by the NHL that allowed for referees to penalize the home team if fans disrupt the game by throwing objects onto the ice.

Is the girl carrying giant grasshoppers,... on ice?
There must be an interesting story behind the photo.
