Bono has identified a new weapon in the war on terrorism: Borat.
The U2 frontman told the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee in Washington, DC, Tuesday that jokes could combat ISIS.
I think comedy should be deployed, he said. I am suggesting that the Senate send in Amy Schumer and Chris Rock and [Borat star] Sacha Baron Cohen . . . You speak violence, you speak [terrorists] language. But you laugh at them . . . and it takes away their power.
Except maybe the ones telling the jokes. Maybe Bono should start?
Secondly, instead of confronting Islamist terror with the unhelpful language of hate and military hardware, it needs to find a kinder, gentler, funnier way of winning them over using comedians like Amy Schumer, Chris Rock, and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Bono was delivering his wisdom to the Senate appropriations subcommittee on Capitol Hill.
He said:
Its like, you speak violence, you speak their language. But you laugh at them when they are goose-stepping down the street and it takes away their power. So I am suggesting that the Senate send in Amy Schumer and Chris Rock and Sacha Baron Cohen, thank you.
Amy Schumer and Sacha Baron Cohen are both Jewish a faith to which ISIS (and Al Qaeda and Boko Haram et al) have not hitherto shown themselves to be particularly sympathetic. On the contrary last year ISIS announced that they were planning a Second Holocaust in which all the worlds Jews would be extinguished. Perhaps Bono is under the impression that Amy Schumers wit would grant her an exemption though up and until now there has been little evidence that ISIS has much of a sense of humour.
Nor do Islamic terror groups respond terribly well to homosexuals like Bruno, the camp Austrian played by Baron Cohen; or even to people who look like they might be homosexuals, such as Borat, when he is wearing his mankini. Their preferred method of dealing with them in accordance with their scriptures is to throw them off high buildings or bury them beneath a wall.
So while Bono may think this is a joking matter or at least one about which we can all be good-natured and touchy-feely it bears so little accordance with the reality of life on the ground in places controlled by Islamic State (and similar groups) that you wonder whether he ever bothers to read a newspaper or even look out of his window when he goes on his global fact finding tours.

I agree we should make fun of ISIS. But remember, Charlie Chaplin didn’t stop Hitler with that movie....
he said we should laugh at them , make fun of them while they goose step, maybe he had not heard about Charlie Hebdo or how ever you spell it.
They made fun of muslims and some died.
Bono why not go over to ISIS territory and do a concert for them too.
He’s an effin @$$h0!3.
And how does he rate a speech to a senate subcommittee?
Send Rosie O and Janeane G.
An idiot like this should have been laughed out of the committee room.
“Bruno” was a lousy film.
“Borat” was funny.
King Julius was, well, excellent!
Another ignorant 1%-er insulated from the consequences of his opinions and actions.
He wouldn’t last 30-seconds in the real world, deprived of his gated residence and 24-hour security detail.
Why was Bono called to testify before Congress? He has no special expertise in Islam or the issue. He is one of 7 billion people on the planet. He is not a voice of the people. Perhaps there should be a congressional rule that every time one of these entertainment yahoos is called to testify before congress about something they know nothing about an ordinary citizen such as a plumber or bus driver should be called to testify beside him and give his opinion also. Also would help if the entertainment yahoo is an American citizen. Perhaps Bono might like to invite Syrian refugees to Ireland.
By no means a Bono fan but that's not what he said. Mocking the enemy is an effective way of boosting morale.
Exactly.
But who laughs at Sacha Baron Cohen?
Great point re the Charlie Hebdo example. Sheesh.
It’s insane how these show business/musician types like Springsteen, Bono, Affleck, Damon, et. al. acquire so much incredible wealth and influence, yet never seem able to process basic logic or conscientious due diligence when it comes to making these stupid political proclamations.
Don’t forget Margaret Cho. She is cut from the same cloth as your 2 excellent candidates.
Why are Follywood entertainers invited to Congressional hearings? Because members of Congress want to talk to celebrities who are as clueless as they are. When has this ever helped the country? Never.
Sure...all they need is jobs and midnight basketball...
