I live in NJ and commute ever day on the NJ Path, which is a lot better than the subways (full of commuters, almost zero riff-raff) but I still keep my situational awareness up to a respectable level, especially walking on the streets.

I was in China in the 90s and went to a lecture at a Chinese University as part of a group from the State Department and one of the visiting Americans put her coat on at the end of the lecture and was in our taxi back to the hotel and she kept complaining about something wrong with her coat and then screamed and a mouse popped out.
Not as bad as a rat, but not a pleasant experience for her.
