WORD FOR THE DAY: TRADUCE
2000 Most Challenging and Obscure Words | Norman Schur

Posted on 03/01/2016 7:50:14 PM PST by Louis Foxwell

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

TRADUCE [truh DOOHS; DYOOHS]

hear it pronounced

verb

To traduce someone is to slander him, vilify him, malign, defame, and calumniate him, speak falsely and with malice toward him or his character; from Latin traducere (to disgrace), a variant of transducere (literally, to carry over; figuratively, to expose, "show up").

In Shakespeare's Othello (Act V, Scene 2) Othello cries to Lodovico who has come to arrest him:

...in Allepo once,
Where a malignant and turban'd Turk
Beat a Venetian and traduc'd the state,
I took by the throat the circumcised dog
And smote him thus.

Whereupon, he obeys Shakespeare's stage directions:Stabs himself. Things are tough all around and it's a bloody mess; but getting back to words and definitions, avoid the common error of identifying slander or defame with libel,

Without going into legal minutia and ramifications, libel is slander in written form and "published," i.e., communicated in that form to a third party or parties. Best advice: Keep your mouth shut and your pen in your pocket, or, in the present tense, your fingers off the keyboard.

Were our current crop of would-be leaders regard admonition against traduction we would be edified but not entertained.

Have at it wordsmiths but watch the course of your calumny.

Awards and commendations in the AM.

My mother told me if I couldn’t say something nice about someone not to say anything at all. IF I don’t go to bed, I am likely to traduce Trump or Rubio. Goodnight!

Au contraire. It is Monsiour Trump who traduces mightily, calling everyone who opposes him stupid, loser, and worse. I have never observed anyone with so fine an education to have such a limited vocabulary.

Can’t really agree with the Trumpster on this one about tariffs - In the past high taxes on trade has done no good but artificially support some industries/industrialists but in general tradreduces and economies decline.

On the other hand, foreign governments support THEIR exports with underground supports and restrictions all over the world.

Oh, c’mon Robert. $2000 iphones are going to be fantastic and classy! Everyone will want one.

(Of course, hardly anyone will be able to, but that just makes them better.)
