Microsoft Pushing Upgrade to Windows 10 Again
Microsoft Windows Update ^ | February 25, 2016 | Self

Posted on 02/25/2016 9:46:15 AM PST by CedarDave

Microsoft PC users be alert. I was notified Tuesday of an important Windows 7 update. It turned out it was an update to install the Windows 10 upgrade app on Windows 7 (and maybe 8 and 8.1) machines, KB 3035583. I thought it might have been the earlier upgrade from last fall, but it was released February 23, 2013 with some file updates from February 17.

I have a sticky note on my monitor with this MS update number (and some others) and when I receive notice of Windows updates I check the list. In this instance, I immediately hid the update so as not to accidentally install it in the future.

The link goes to MS support info; it won't download the app unless you choose to.

I’ve been told that although windows 10 is pretty good, my older Sony Vaio computer will probably do better to stay on Windows 7. I’m sorry Sony doesn’t make these or much else these days because Sony was the best.

Resistance is futile. Just remember that with Windows 10 on your computer there will never be a problem between the FBI and Microsoft accessing your information because MS will already have it whether it is encrypted or not. So be a “good” citizen and download Win10 and use it. Bwa ha ha ha.

Yesterday I called the person who has helped me with computers since he is in the business and I have had good luck with his suggestions and work in the past.

Bottom line - He is going to upgrade me from Win 7 to Win 10 in May.
He told me another update to Win 10 would be made in April and to wait until it was out, and then he would come over and update my computer.

I hear a lot of pros and cons on Win 10 but I trust his judgement. - Tom

As has been pointed out many times here, Windows 10 has numerous "report home" apps that send personal date back to Microsoft, supposedly for insuring quality of the operating system. However, IMO the volume of info sent compared to that in earlier versions belies that.

Be sides KB 3035583, here are the other "updates" on my list:
KB 2952664
KB 3022345
KB 3068708
KB 3075249
KB 3080149
KB 3083710

I have removed the updates I’ve seen on your list and elsewhere on FR. They almost immediately show up on the next listing of updates. I choose “hide this update” when I see them and they disappear from the download list.

I always try to keep my computers up to date, and knew that there were some black tuesday updates that needed to be taken care of on my Win 7 laptop, but they were not showing up on my task bar. The only update it showed was the Win 10 update. I think I had to run Windows Update and look for other downloads to get the updates.

Even if you lock down Win 10 as much as possible it still spies on you.

Why, are you having problems w/ Win 7? If not, i.e., if it's not broken, don't "fix" it.

From the link in my #7:

Windows 10's a different story. As I've explained repeatedly, Win10 is starting to collect data for the purpose of targeting ads -- not unlike Windows Live Messenger, years ago, and Google and Facebook and many others, for as long as they've been around. You should understand the privacy implications before you decide to upgrade (or not) to Windows 10. The fact that Windows 10 continues to leak information even after all the CEIP/Cortana/Bing settings have been shut off does not instill confidence.

I already drank the cool aid. Had to buy a new computer recently and it came with Win10 installed. I’m not willing to move to Unix type machine and I don’t like Apple. I’ve been on a windows based machine since 1983. I am connected to the world electronically whether it is my computer or my cable tv service or mobile phone. Someone out there is going to spy on me if only to push some product my way. I don’t have to like it but I’ve grown use to it.

I am not having any problems with Win 7. I don't know how long it will be supported.
When he comes to my computer I will go over all these options. Win 7 has slowed down a lot and maybe just speeding up will be OK, or I will upgrade to 10 if he thinks it is best for me.
I have faith in his decision.

Because computer users have many different demands , what might be right for some users might not be right for others. That even goes to whether you should have a PC or a Mac.
Unlike gamers, my computer use is very basic. -Tom

I’m going to be upgrading shortly, but I’m also migrating back to Linux. Virtually all of the tools I use are supported by Linux now. Only my PCB design software is Windows ... it won’t run under Wine, so I’ll keep my Win10 install license just for that. Only reason I need Win10 is for that and some gaming stuff I enjoy from time to time.

I, personally, couldn’t care less about 99% of what they observe when it comes to my filthy web browsing life. It’s quite boring really. I don’t think I’ve ever bought one damn thing that was the result of some targeted ad on the internet.

What I do care about is any data collection related to politics.

After seeing what the IRS does to people these days, I don’t want any headaches over my criticism of those low lifes in DC if I go on a rant and Windows 10 reports my visits to FR back to the mothership and some punk in DC somehow gets access to that data. I get quite angry doing taxes ... I hate paying TurboTax money just to make it through the convoluted tax code each year and spending a couple of hours computing how much money those scummy filthmongers extort from me each year.

If I have to both spend time filling out tax forms each year and get audited just because I said some mean things about the “benevolent, all powerful, and life-producing” IRS on a political forum, I’ll succumb to nerd rage that will not be very healthy :-). I can’t stand dealing with any bureaucrats. Douglas Adams nailed bureaucrats with the introduction of the Vogons perfectly.

Thanks CD.

I have the same list except I have KB3021917 on mine also.

Any input on that number?

I don't remember how it made 'the list'.

Here is a link to the support info:

Update to Windows 7 SP1 for performance improvements

Sounds like it identifies performance issues in Win 7 machines that may pose problems in future updates (but Win 10 not mentioned). The files date to December 12, 2014 so it's quite old.

The very word "upgrade" is nothing but PC bullshit.

If it was a true upgrade it would:

1) provide needed features over and above your current OS

2) utilize your system's resources better through more efficient code

3) be compatible with your existing software/hardware base

4) install with minimum disruption.

Windows 10 does none of these things. It DOES load your computer with tons of spyware while being antithetical to the above goals.

Windows 10 is a DOWNGRADE and is designed to benefit Microcephalic, not you. It enhances their monopoly, nothing more.
