Our family was going through the area and we thought it would be good to see it. But, when we got there, we decided it was too expensive for what it actually was, so we passed it up.
I really wanted to see it, too. I’m just such a skin flint.

That is for objects at light speed, for bullets and such, it is E=.5MV2

Poor Chelyabinsk in Siberia got hit a while ago by a much smaller meteor that exploded near by. Lots of damage.

So going by figured mention here mass 160,000 tons, velocity is 25,000 miles per hour we one hell of a lot of joules of energy. I am not going to do the arithmetic, my calculator does not count that high.

wrong equation that is an equation for motion. Force = mass x acceleration.

when in physics class the MA implies multiplication of the mass and acceleration.

Correct you use that equation to find the force necessary to impart an acceleration on some mass.

“seriously what kind of damage would a 30 meter do?”
Barringer Crater was formed by an impactor estimated to be about 50 meters in diameter. A 30 meter impactor could produce a blast equivalent to around a 10 megaton yield nuclear weapon.

A bit off in your speed conversion, should be around 11,000 m/s.
As it is, the energy contained in that rock would cost about $250 Million if purchased as electricity - it’s about the output of one large nuke reactor operating for a year...and likely equals all of the world’s power production for an hour.
But it is released at one point in virtually one instant. It will be noticed.

Can this be right
Minimum approach * lunar distance = miles
0.000207037 * 238900 = 49.46108572

Recalculating....
25,000 MPH=25,000 miles/hr*5280 ft/mile*60 minutes/hour*60 seconds/minute=475,200,000,000 ft./second.
Divide by 3.2808 to get meters/second and the answer is 144,842,721,287 m/second.
Using statute miles instead of nautical miles (6000 ft./mile), which would give a higher result.

Guys, tell me I’m wrong about the minimum approach, 50 miles. I can’t find the margin of error for the approach calculations but YIKES!
