Generic recommendations:

64 bit processor - dual core
8 gig memory
1 Tbyte hard drive

If used for high end gaming, then high end video card

For what kind of activities do you intend to use it? Do you want a laptop, or a desktop? How much are you looking to spend?

You need to provide more information if you want to get useful rwcommendations.

My computer is a desk top and I like the convenience of having the keyboard on the pull out tray.

My current computer is slow to start up and is now creating script errors so I've decided to get a new one.

I'm not sure I want a lap top since I have no need to carry it anywhere.

I'd like to keep the cost down but yet keep the stuff I have on it such as Windows Office and Excell..........

thanks for your assistance

How tech savy are you? Ask around for the best local computer places. You get a warranty and service they don’t have to send away for. Avoid the box stores. I always heard good things about Tiger Direct for online buys.

You can probably buy a 2-3 year old hp or Dell desktop computer used for $150 or less and a medium sized screen for $125 off your local Craigslist. SEE IF YOU CAN GET THE DOCs that came it. If it has WDOs 7 it will relentlessly ask you to upgrade to W10, which I have not done, nor do I plan to. It may make no difference to you.

Local places can also transfer all of that.

Don’t think about anything below a Quad core.

Do you have favorite personal gear you want to use with it - keyboard, pointing device, monitor - or are you looking for a complete replacement?

What do you want to do with it?

If you want to keep it for the next ten years doing what you have been with a ten year old box, any name-brand (Acer, Asus, Lenovo, HP, Dell) Intel i5-based desktop should do the trick. If you want a little extra reliability, and less adware built in, opt for a business model rather than a consumer model (Acer’s business line is Veriton, consumer line is Aspire; hp’s Pavilion is consumer). The Intel i3 is acceptable for now, but if you are going to keep the PC for a while, the i5 is the value sweet spot.

It's pretty basic really, I'm on the internet alot and I'm constantly creating documents via MS Word.

I'm not a gamer and only have one or two software programs I've loaded on to the computer. One is DVD Copy.......

Thanks

That’s like saying:

“I need a new gun!”

So much depends upon what you need and how much you are willing to pay.

Have not seen one of those in years. Kind of refreshing.

Remember the old Friden gear driven calculators that would grind away for several seconds before producing an answer?

I'm happy with the keyboard, mouse and monitor on my desk, all I'm looking for is the computer itself. Everyone seems to have a laptop now but I don't think that would be an advantage to me.

But then again, with WiFi, I guess I could surf the web from any room with a laptop..........

Used one of those in 1966, my first year working in a manufacturing plant. We were taking inventory.
