First U.S. Zika virus transmission reported, attributed to sex

The first known case of Zika virus transmission in the United States was reported in Texas on Tuesday by local health officials, who said it likely was contracted through sex and not a mosquito bite, a day after the World Health Organization declared an international public health emergency.

The virus, linked to severe birth defects in thousands of babies in Brazil, is spreading rapidly in the Americas, and WHO officials on Tuesday expressed concern that it could hit Africa and Asia as well. Zika had been thought to be spread by the bite of mosquitoes of the Aedes genus, so sexual contact as a mode of transmission would be a potentially alarming development.

Dallas County Health and Human Services said it received confirmation of the case in Dallas from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The county department said on Twitter that the person was infected through sexual contact with someone who had traveled to Venezuela. The person infected did not travel to the South American country, county health officials said.

Can the mosquitos contract the virus from infected humans?

I finally got around to doing some zika research today. it seems to be rather benign aside from the birth defect problem. If you get infected...
1> you probably won’t even know.
2> the virus leaves your body once it’s defeated by the immune system.
3> you now have permanent immunity.

So why not intentionally infect folks during the winter (no mosquitoes). It would only work for someone with zero chance of pregnancy.

“Can the mosquitos contract the virus from infected humans?”

Yes.

I suppose you will see Obama, rather than block immigrants from south of the border, move more immigrants in from the infected areas, which is EVERYPLACE south of the border.. He will claim that we have no choice; that is who we are. Those are our values.

Now when it spreads here, then we will be able to more commiserate with the less fortunate, and it will serve us right because of the evil of white privilege.

For the first time in my married life, I’m glad I’m not pregnant. I would be in near hysteria panic mode as mosquito season approaches.

This Zika virus has come out of nowhere - to the news. My first thought when hearing this story was “how do they know that it was spread during sex?” Isn’t it much like a cold?
Breathing close to an infected person might make a person catch it.

I wonder how much taxpayer money will be spent on this - in many ways.

A vaccine soon. I hope so. Although this has been around since the 50’s. But perhaps just in remote southern third-world countries so no profit-motive to make a virus, whereas now there will be.

Or - have Zika parties to get infected and immune. Although if transmitted during sex, I’m guessing these parties won’t look like the mumps(?) parties they used to have years ago.

You’re Welcome. It is getting around, and I wonder how many people are aware of it.

Don't know. My wife does (neurologist), however it was a surprise to many including some medical staff in the DR where we have a project.

All around this strikes me as Fubar. The history, the spread, disinformation already and no serious discussion on eradication. We need to bring back DDT asap.

Zika virus was identified in Uganda in 1947. It has been present in Africa and Asia for at least that long. It tends to follow the distribution of Yellow Fever and the Aedes aegypti mosquito, although the range of YF has been drastically reduced by vaccination and mosquito control.

Why Brazil and why now are good questions.

The purported sexual transmission in Texas should be subjected to intense skepticism, although asking that from the media is asking a lot.
