Only 22 cases of Guinea worm disease were reported in 2015, the Carter Center announced last week, a significant drop from the 126 cases reported in 2014.
The cases were spread across 20 villages in four countries, two of which â Mali and South Sudan â are split by tribal fighting that hampers eradication efforts.

I learned about the nasty guinea worm in biology class in middle school. The worm might be the inspiration for the early life stages of the Zenomorph from the "Alien" franchise. Jimmy Carter might be the 2nd worst POTUS and a pain the neck post-POTUS but if he can finally eradicate this parasite that would be a great achievement. I wonder where groups like PETA are. Are they not opposed to mankind trying to wipe out an animal species?

True. Carter has made this a years long project for the Carter Center and it appears to be approaching final success. They all deserve high praise and recognition.

I also admire Carter for his post-POTUS work with Habitat for Humanity, but agree that he was a terrible president and has been out of line with his post-POTUS comments and interference.

I wish Carter more success eradicating disease than he had as a President. That former gig was a national disaster.

Until the Ivermectins, the only way to remove this worm was to roll it up on a stick a few mm every day until it was out from the subcutaneous tissue. I saw one removed using medical tape and a tongue depressor the same way back in the early 1970’s as an airman from Nigeria came to the base hospital with one on his leg.
