Apple Registers 'Apple.car' and Other Auto-Related Domains

Apple Registers 'Apple.car' and Other Auto-Related Domains

Apple has registered a trio of auto-related top-level domain names, including apple.car, apple.cars and apple.auto. Whois records updated on January 8 show that Apple registered the domains through sponsoring registrar MarkMonitor Inc. in December 2015, although the addresses are not yet active.

Apple-car-domain
The domains could be related to CarPlay, but there will naturally be speculation about their possible relation to Apple's much-rumored electric vehicle plans. Multiple reports over the past year said Apple has a secretive team of hundreds working on an electric vehicle with a prospective 2019 or 2020 shipping date.

There is increasing evidence that Apple is at least exploring the auto industry, including the iPhone maker's discussions with a secure Bay Area testing facility for connected and autonomous vehicles and the company's August meeting with the California DMV to review self-driving vehicle regulations.

Apple-GM-Tesla
Apple has aggressively recruited engineers and other talent from Tesla, Ford, GM, Samsung, A123 Systems, Nvidia and elsewhere to work on the rumored "Apple Car" project, which has allegedly been called "Project Titan" internally. Electric motorcycle startup Mission Motors even ceased operations after losing employees to Apple.

Apple likely remains in the earlier stages of research and development of its rumored electric vehicle, and it remains possible the company's plans change over the next three to four years. Nevertheless, the trio of new domains provide yet another clue that Apple may one day compete with the likes of Tesla and Google.

They are full on nuts if they really plan to get in the auto business. Still not sure I believe it - maybe it’s just some user interface for the car (which would be cool - tons of opportunity there).

I remember in the '70s, giving my boss at GM a purchase request for an Apple computer. His reply: "GM purchasing would never offer a PO to a company named (say with disgust) 'Apple'." Here's how that worked out for him - Market cap Old GM: $0 AAPL: $half trillion.

That said, a car must not only get you where you want to go, it must also warm and cool you, light your way, do it safely, and entertain you while it's doing it. Current battery technology can't even do this all for two hours while sitting in your driveway, much less get you where you want to go, and back. All the elves in silicone valley can't change that unless they also invent new batteries along the way.

If AAPL ever does make a car it’ll be hell on the owners as the proprietary “refueling interface” (aka “the plug”) will change every 3 to 4 months an cost thousands to “update”.

bout 15 years ago, my son and I were returning from a camping trip and stopped for gas. As I’m pumping gas, I saw the car at the next island catch on fire (not quite as bad as your pic, but headed there quickly). I slammed the nozzle back on the pump and took off as fast as I could. It’s a damn sight to see that next to you!

I like your point about how vehicle fires only occur on EVs — Not!

A stock cannot make anything. It has no ability to do anything except be traded. The company which is associated with it may, perhaps make something.

However, your snarky Apple connector MYTH bears no relationship to reality, Neidermeyer. Apple connectors are industry standards. . . the latest MacBooks are powered by USB-C connectors, built to the USB standards organizations specifications. Thunderbolt and Lightning connectors are also standard connections. . . as were Firewire connectors. They just happen to be the most efficient and fastest connections available.

If Apple does change their connectors, it is for excellent engineering purposes, and it is not "every 3 to 4 months." Not even a nice try, Neidermeyer. Sophomoric at best.
