Hawaii's last sugar plantation is getting out of the sugar-growing business.
Alexander & Baldwin Inc. said Wednesday that it will phase out sugar by the end of this year. Its 36,000 acre-Maui plantation will be divided into smaller farms to grow biofuels and food crops. The land will also provide irrigated pasture to local cattle ranchers. ...

Give them Sugar subsidies. /s
No pineapples. No sugar. Bummer.
I wonder what they’re expecting to receive in terms of subvention once their new biofuels business gets into full sway?
A subject and an issue I am totally unaware of .... but seems like another rape of American enterprise ...
No more “pure cane sugar from Hawaii”!!?
Eventually it will become wall to wall condos, subdivisions, and jiffy-lubes once the subsidized ‘green’ stuff doesn’t pan out and the true market value of the real estate is fully exploited.
I remember the plantation. It is right in the center of Maui.
I’d be worried about typhoons in that area. That is in the lowland area where the typhoon water would be funneled between Haleaklala and the western mountain/Iao Valley.
C&H will need a new song.
Too bad that the Howlands are going out of business.
That is fact
:(
And it will be as attractive as cr**.
So the occupants will move to the next pristine area to spoil.
The cane and pineapple fields, and their associated mills and factories are long gone. Replaced by welfare and the “victim culture.”
Wealthy Asians and Haoles, and phony Leftists like Hussein Obama, still live like kings there while doling out the taxpayer’s money to keep the locals quiet.
Sounds to me like a company making changes to stay profitable in a changing market. Food is expensive in Hawaii because of shipping costs.
They call them hurricanes in Hawaii. They call them typhoons west of the International Date Line.
I think it’s a real good deal this “plantation” is stopped.
Just think of all the micro aggressions just simply seeing this word creates. It’s really horrifying, seeing this word, and seeing those Southern Republican KKK slave holders working the sugar cane fields.
I’m so ashamed of being a White Christian male whose ancestors never held slaves or killed an Indian, I just want to jump off a cliff.
No more sugar. Eat your kale and rice cakes and be quiet.
Biofuels turn food into oil. It does nothing to feed a hungry child.
