We are just at the edge of DSL service. The internet service is at times very slow and video streaming can be a real pain. There are no plans for upgrading to higher speeds for several years. We are considering either Time Warner cable for internet service only. It looks like the fee is about $35.00 per month for the standard package or about $65.00 a month for an even faster service. We don't intend to purchase any TV packages just internet.
Any suggestions from fellow FREEPERS will be appreciated. We would prefer not to use Dish but would consider it.

Cable internet will be faster, more reliable, and probably cheaper than satellite.
We have Dish for TV and a DSL telephone/Internet line.
We’re probably paying a bit more than if we combined the two.
There was a cable system hereabouts but it was off more than on. I discovered a long section laying in a ditch near our place so I wasn’t surprised when a neighbor told me to stick with Dish.
Dish will be subject to outages based on any number of environmental factors. Cable will not. Based on that alone, I went with cable. Haven’t had a regret yet. YMMV.
I worked for a cable company. The best Internet is cable for almost everyone. The best TV is Direct TV. It has its flaws but it has far more channels. I frankly, don’t want all those channels. I get Cable for internet only and have an antenna for local sports. Its good enough for me.
A couple of years ago we switched to Verizon FIOS, and our installer carefully gathered up all the Time Warner connecting gear and boxes, telling us to be sure and turn them all in or we'd quite likely get a letter from a collection agency.
Bingo - turned it all in at TW's local office, and got the dated receipt which in reality showed that we should get a small refund.....but within three lousy weeks, we got a threatening demand letter from some joint on the East Coast, looking for 90 bucks or so.
I got it all straightened out, but every time I see a TW rep I tear him - loudly! - a new asshole.
Fo Internet only, go with cable. Faster and more reliable.
Go cable. I recently moved and the only option I have is Dish and it is horribly slow compared to cable. It also has outages due to weather conditions, but they also limit bandwidth monthly.
Hands down cable internet if they have upgraded to digital in your area......
You don’t need to get cable TV since your streaming would be very reliable....
The get a good digital rooftop antenna with a remote directional control.....
I have Cox Cable internet. The mid-level package has 50 Mbps (up from 20 about a year ago) and 350 Gb upload/download (up from 250 Gb).
The cable internet is what keeps me with the cable company. None of the satellite/mobile offer anywhere close to the speech and capacity, and most are higher priced.
I stream a lot of Netflix, ballgames, Amazon Prime. Even the cable TV now streams many of the cable channels.
I could probably go with the lesser package and save about $15/month, but it is nice to click on a Netflix movie and have it start almost immediately.
My service costs around $65/month for Internet. I own the cable modem/router.
High speed with no cable TV packages. Get amazon prime and Netflix. It will take years to watch the good stuff.
Here is my advice. As much as everyone loves to complain about their internet service provider, we have Time Warner, and its generally pretty good. ALWAYS negotiate price with them. Get an intro package, and when it expires, call back and try to get that price again. They’re more flexible than they let on.
Buy a modem, and don’t pay $8 a month to rent one from them. You can get a good one for about $90, and its paid for in a year. I made the mistake of renting for about 8 years just because i wasn’t paying attention, and realized I ended up paying hundreds to rent the lousy, slow modem that I was using.
Finally, we have DirecTV and love it. We have the Genie, and you can put a TV wherever you want in the house. All you need is a power outlet, and everything else is wireless (except for the main television that will need a single coax cable running to the dish).

We have Directv for our television and TW cable for our internet. We used to have AT&T DSL but it was out all the time ( their modems are crap). In over a year with TW we have never had an outage.
I agree. I have gone from 300 baud all the way to 50 meg cable with everything including DSL in between and cable is the only way to go. We take the most basic of basic tv cable that uses no cable box (roughly 65 channels) and get 50 meg cable internet (their slowest now) for $63.00 a month.
In a few years it’s all going to be streaming wireless, and no one will need cable for anything.
In the boondocks of Texas and no cable access. We signed on with what once was Internet America. Just this year purchased by Rise (out of Colorado, IIRC) Unable to say they are great and we are happy, but they’ve become better in the seven years we’ve used them. About $50 a month, speed adequate most of the time servicing two computers, service tech would give them a B-
