You may have a relative who is a liberal drone, who worships at the altar of Obama, Hillary, global warming, deindustrialization, and whatever else they have been programmed to think. It can be unpleasant to hear them go on and on about how great Obama is and how evil the Republicans are, and you certainly can't speak out because that will start a major battle. If your relative is a hardened leftist, nothing you can say would make any difference as well. So why should you love that?

But no matter how despicable you may think that person with whom you have a mutual loathing, somebody else may hold that person in high esteem, but they also want to triangulate on this and consider YOU a friend as well.

I have a BIL who is a socialist but tells everyone he’s a social conservative. It fools NO ONE and much of the family finds him reprehensible. There is a child involved however so we make peace for the sake of the mother, being being there is no communication with the BIL at all. Love? Maybe he can be reclaimed and salvaged, but for now his mark on the mother and child will last long after he is gone.

You can’t choose your relatives so it’s a trial at times, but strive to love them anyway and barring that, tolerate them. For the sake of the rest of the family if for no other reason.
I feel called to love everyone, whether he/she is a relative or not. I always have a good book on my kindle which is also my phone so if it gets really bad (I’m blessed that it rarely does) I can go in the other room with a glass of wine and read. But as I’ve grown older I realize that I can’t change the other person and he/she might be interesting to listen too even if I don’t agree. I find that if I listen and don’t respond, pretty much the conversation calms down, the other person’s energy winds down and life goes on. Merry Christmas all and God’s blessings on you.
