A Boy Scout troop leader was mauled by a bear after he and three Scouts stumbled upon the animal in northern New Jersey on Sunday, the Rockaway Township Police Department said.
The three Scouts accompanying him were unharmed, officials said.
The Boy Scout leader, Christopher Petronino, took the three Scouts to a cave at Split Rock Reservoir in Morris County, which is about 25 miles west of New York City. The 50-year-old had known about the cave since the 1980s but had never witnessed a bear using it before, according to CNN affiliate WCBS.
When Petronino entered the cave Sunday afternoon, a black bear reached for the Scout leader's foot, biting him on the leg, shoulder and arm, according to officials. Petronino then hit the bear with a rock hammer, curled up into the fetal position and shouted to the boys to call for help.
Officials searched by ground and air after one of the Scouts called 911.

So many things wrong with this story, so many apparent violations of BSA policies I don't know where to begin.
But allowing homos into Scouting is way more important than insisting and ensuring that leaders comply with and implement the rules. This is but one reason why Scouting will see a continued decrease in membership...stupid leaders placing kids at risk.
Our boys will be going into Trail Life now that the BSA has become a ‘safe zone’ for homosexuals and pederasts.

I don’t remember if Scoutmasters carried firearms during my scouting time, but are BSA leaders allowed to carry during camping outings now?
Absolutely not...per policy.

Just last spring, there was a kid from Rutgers Univ. who was hiking in the area with friends who was killed by a bear.

I wish Drudge would take that nasty story down. UGH!!! I keep going there, forgetting it is there. I do not want to know anything about that. However, it does seem to go with this story. How far we have sunk as a society.
I got my Hunters Safety through the Boy Scouts. I shot my first firearm while taking the class.
I suspect that one or all of the Scout Masters “carried” while we are out in the field. That was many years ago.
A roommate of mine back when I was at Dover, was from NJ...he lived in a pretty rural area and lots of wildlife...it’s easy to see how folks think it’s pretty urban.

It wasn’t the BSA violations that were the problem here.
It was that the Scoutmaster bore a significant resemblence to Leonardo DiCaprio.
Just looking for a date to cuddle with during hibernation I suppose?
