George Lazenby bluffed his way into being James Bond, then bumbled it

George Lazenby certainly looked the part. But could the 28 year old, who had no acting experience and was more himbo than sophisticate, really play James Bond?

Producers ran him through a series of tests to make sure the model could play the role. His acting was reviewed. His fighting ability was judged. Then, in another important consideration for the times, they made sure their hero wasn’t gay.

“Himbo”? I don’t believe I’ve ever come across the word before, and didn’t recognize it as a play on “bimbo” until I looked it up.

IMHO, Lazenby did better than Timothy Dalton and Roger Moore.

Interesting article, especially that Lazenby overcame poor choices to succeed in another career. Definitely click-worthy, thanks for posting!

they made sure their hero wasnt gay; A male employee brought up girls on separate occasions and stayed while Lazenby made love to them.

Actually, at best that may demonstrate he is bi-sexual.

I recall a Chief who said any guy that wanted out for being gay all he had to do was come to his quarters after lights out and prove it.

To me, “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” is one the best Bond films, and I thought Lazenby was quite good in it.

Still one of the better Bond cars the “Big M” of Ms. Rigg.

He’s one of my favorite Bonds...I think he did very well in the role and portrayed 007 just like Fleming wrote him. He just screwed up in walking away from the role afterward.

This idiot could have equaled or eclipsed the great Sean Connery in the role, but he blew it off for hippy dippy nonsense.

I was so in love with Diana Rigg in that 007 film, had already seen her in The Avengers. Was also in love with the Walther PPK she was holding, as they had been banned from import in 1969.

Lazenby was perfect for the Bond role. Better than Moore.

“This never happened to that other fellow!”

For years there has been a body of Bond aficianados who prefer him. Regardless, he did one thing perhaps no one could do, which is, he followed Sean Connery. :')

I saw that movie at the theater. It was OK. A few years later it was shown on TV and I was not sure it was the same movie.
They started the movie (on TV) in the middle in which Bond, on skis is escaping from the castle, ends up in a car race in town, then a voice over mentions “And how did I get into this predicament?” Then it reverts to the beginning titles and officially starts. I believe it was shown over two weekends. Half one Saturday night, then the rest the next Saturday night.

Yes on Diana Rigg in the Avengers too..

I even had a 64 Lotus Elan in 1971, bought it in Detroit for $200 with a blown up engine - no-one knew what it really was...:^)

It was the same color but I didn't know it at the time since we only saw the Avengers on a B/W TV in the UK.
