We called those deadheads - once when salmon trolling near Pelican, AK we saw one 2+ foot diameter log moving vertically up and down in the swells. I mean 15-20 feet coming straight up out of the water then disappearing completely - not sure how long the log was but it could have punched a nasty hole in our 34 foot wooden boat.

For any boat motoring in the night, this floating stump could prove to be a disaster if one would hit it. I’m surprised it hasn’t been removed from the lake...........

Appears very real in the second picture. Looks like a man with a hat on and wearing boots. I can see why the legend got started.
