The San Francisco sheriff who over the summer became embroiled in a national debate over 'sanctuary city' policies on Tuesday lost his bid for re-election amid a host of local controversies.
Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, 54, was defeated by Vicki Hennessy, a former sheriff's official who had the endorsement of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and the sheriff deputies association. As of early Wednesday morning, Hennessy had received 62 percent of the vote to just 31 percent for Mirkarimi.
Mirkarimi was the subject of national criticism after Mexican illegal immigrant Francisco Sanchez allegedly shot and killed 32 year old Kate Steinle on San Francisco's waterfront July 1. Sanchez had been released from Mirkarimis jail in March even though federal immigration officials had requested he be detained for possible deportation.
But since then, the sheriffs oversight of the department has been plagued by other high-profile mishaps and controversies seen as contributing to his defeat. He had his drivers license briefly suspended for failing to properly report a minor accident while driving a department issued car, and he also flunked a marksmanship test.
Before those two incidents, a drug gang leader escaped from jail, and guards were accused of staging and gambling on inmate fights.
In November 2014, Mirkarimi also was forced to apologize for the bungled search for a San Francisco General Hospital patient whose body was found in a stairwell weeks after she wandered from her room. The sheriff is in charge of the hospital's security, but deputies didnt search the building until nine days after her disappearance. The city paid the patient's family $3 million to settle a lawsuit.
But Mirkarimi is now known nationally for his strident defense of sanctuary city policies, taking the practice to a new level under his leadership.

Hopefully, other families will not suffer the loss that Kate Steinle’s family did.
Will it make a difference? Will the sanctuary city cease to exist?
Hopefully the next president will have the Justice Department arrest and convict any mayor who allows their city to be an illegal sanctuary city.
When we get a new administration, we will get “Kate’s Law”.

It will never cease to exist. It's a city CHOCK full of folks from all over the US who decided not to deal with summers and winters akin to Siberia. Mind you, there are very few degrees which separate summer and winter. It's a blazing 55 degrees in the summer and a freezing 48 in the winter. One doesn't EVER need a fur coat or anything more than a heavy sweater in the winter.
There are only TWO seasons, dry during the "summer" and wet during the rainy season. Each lasts about six months. Folks from afar end up missing the four seasons. They go back home but return. Their choice.
Besides, it has baseball, the orange color from the old New York Giants. It might even get back its basketball team as the Golden State Warriors aren't very war-like.
Football? It will never return to the City by the Bay. Property values are just to ridiculously high. Besides, as Joe Montana said: "The 49er owners didn't try very hard to get them back."
Maybe the property tax rates aren't so ungodly high on the Peninsula.
It's the folks from the rest of the USA who make the City so expensive. They KNOW that any home or business here will cost an arm and a leg. They know that.
Also there are jobs.
San Francisco is the banking capital of the west.
Silicon Valley attracts all the folks from across the Pacific. They'll work for MUCH less and do the same amount of work.
People keep waiting for the prices to drop. They won't with a city on a small peninsula, surrounded on three sides by ocean and bays, with jobs, a ton of tourist attactions, sports teams, six/seven bridges spanning the many bays and waterways and a reputation for decent food. It's a small city, only 49 square miles.
People CHOOSE to move to the Left Coast. Their choice. The state wouldn't be so HUGE if it weren't for the Americans who choose to leave hearth and home from un-California.

There are almost NO native San Franciscans. Most have died out or moved to Nevada. It's a city populated by people from other states and other countries. Jobs bring them here.

75 percent of the people that sell out ATT every game are from the south & east bay, if the post game traffic on hwys 80 and 101 are any indication.
His biggest problem now, not that I give a sh*t, is that he filled a very specific niche. He was a useful idiot because of the position that he held. Now, with all the baggage that he has due to the murder of Kate Steinle, he’s a walking liability and PR nightmare. And it’s highly unlikely that he’d be able to pass a background anywhere else, with his domestic violence conviction.
Yep, I thought about saying they will have to add on an extension to the left end of city hall but figured that would be redundant. But re natives, there are a lot of native SFers here, most move up to Marin but they are still here, except my wife came here from France, she has been here 20 years, in Paris she was teaching all muslim kids and they would refuse to speak french.
