How crop artist Stan Herd made an acre-wide ode to "Olive Trees"
If you're flying through MinneapolisSt. Paul International Airport this fall, keep an eye out for Vincent van Gogh's "Olive Trees" from your airplane window. It won't be hard to miss this aerial crop art covers more than an acre of land.
The unique ode to van Gogh is the work of landscape artist Stan Herd, reports Mary Abbe for the Star Tribune. It was commissioned to honor two milestones: the Minneapolis Institute of Art's centennial and the 125th anniversary of van Gogh's death. "It's an iteration of Van Gogh's painting writ large in native plants and materials," Herd tells Abbe. "The opportunity to engage with one of my favorite artists in the world was pretty unique for me."
It took Herd six months of digging and planting to recreate van Gogh's 1889 painting, which currently on display at the MIA. To mimic the artist's iconic brushwork, Herd grew patches of pumpkins, squash, watermelons and cantaloupes, while arranging mulch, rocks and soil to create darker lines, according to Nick Mafi at Architectural Digest.

Perhaps they’ll listen now.

While it’s cool to see such a large scale, it’s not so much pumpkins and squash but mowed weeds, plowed dirt and mulch that makes up the colors making it a let down.

"I am forever amazed at people who are endowed with creativity such as this..." I'm more intrigued by the concept of somebody having the free time to do this...If I put, "die" at the very end of my to do list, I'll live forever.

Some years ago I was driving across the USA and low and behold I had a breakdown on a Sunday afternoon on a flat stretch of interstate in Kansas. Lots of growling made me think my transmission had gone but it turned out it was the fuel pump. Nearest town was Goodland Kansas so I was towed there and the vehicle left at an auto shop which would open Monday morning. So I stayed at the nearest motel and right across from it was a large easel with one of Van Gogh's Sunflower paintings which thanks to the internet I found a photo of. It left an indelible impression on me as well as always knowing now that Kansas is known as the Sunflower state.

It's a little known fact that Van Gogh (fon-gock) inspired Mike Tyson.
