Not really. 99% of the use of Flash these days is for advertising of the obnoxious type.

Then there are those of us who actually use vSphere. :(

I followed the uninstall instructions and Shockwave still appears in my add-ons.

Yeah, I hear ya, same problem here. I'm using a special-purpose captive VM on my workstation for that. No web browsing or email permitted on that VM.

Where’s the article explaining the current Flash trouble?

Doesn’t Flash help run things like Youtube, etc.? And if so, what would be a good substitute?

Make sure you closed ALL instances of all your browsers, otherwise something may be holding onto the plugin.

If you're running Linux, it's possible the flashplayer file is stored in multiple places; I only suggested those two as examples, it depends on your distro and how you installed it.

Which OS are you running?

YouTube now provides nearly all their videos in HTML5 or other non-Flash format, so you can run YT on iPads and iPhones and other devices that don't support Flash. YouTube is not a problem.

There's no direct substitute for Flash for things like games that were written in Flash.

Microsoft developed SilverLight as a "Flash killer" some years ago; it had about as much success killing Flash as their Zune did at killing the iPod. SL is still available but nothing is written in it and MS is desupporting it.

It's important to note that the Windows 10 browser "Edge" does not support plugins at all. This is a clue. Plugins are a security risk even at the best of times, and they load down the browser.

The future is without plugins, at least of that old sort.

If you removed it from Programs and Features, and it no longer appears in that list, but only within the browser Add-Ons page, then you might try a (what else?) reboot, to make absolutely sure nothing is holding onto the old files.

It really ought to go away at that point.

A reboot didn't help.

Does Adobe Reader XII have anything to do with Shockwave? It's still in my programs list.

In windows 8.1 itay be enabled in the IE app as well as IE desktop. Try launching the app and disable ot there as well. Note this is just a guess since I do not have a Windows 8 computer handy right now.
