Bob and Ray Slow Talkers

One of the funniest sketches of the last Century.

TOPICS: Humor; Music/Entertainment
KEYWORDS: bob; ray; slow; talkers
Posting this so other candidates can hear how they sound, compared with Donald Trump. All the other candidates speak a sentence, wait for fifteen seconds of applause. They they speak another sentence. Wait for fifteen seconds of applause. Etc. It's excruciating to listen to.

One of my favorites of their sketch comedy. Especially the interviewer finally blowing his cork.

I work with a guy who is a little like this. He explains things in tremendous detail, even when people are desperately trying to tell him that they completely understand his point. He keeps going. Trying to explain it. Just being clear. And thorough. So that they can understand his point.

My father worked with a guy who, if you went to his office, and said nothing, he said nothing. The instant you started to speak, he started to speak. If you stopped talking, he stopped talking.

Was one of my favorite radio shows as a kid - loved the famous closing line: “Write if you get work, meanwhile, hang by your thumbs”.

In those days everyone was a slow talker - people who talked fast were ‘odd’ and mostly incomprehensible.

My boss interrupts everyone. It’s to the point now that I don’t even want to talk to him. He thinks he knows what everyone is going to say and tries to finish their sentences. I’ve called him on it many time and I’ve even stopped and let him finish only to tell him he was wrong - oh so wrong - but he still does it.

Few things annoy me more than people who MUST finish every sentence.

I like to say things like this (which is from Mark Twain):

“Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow just as well.”

Of course, you can never say anything like that around a sentence-completer.

Have you tried stopping cold when he interrupts, letting him finish. And then calmly finishing the sentence.

Or, try raising your voice whenever he interrupts, and just shouting the rest of your sentence.

While stationed in Germany. Brought back memories of a must listen, too good to miss Bob And Ray offerings, via AFRS during the early 50’s . Remember first hearing that skit.

Oh, sure. It does no good. He's sure that he knows what everyone is going to say.

The first time I heard this, I was literally on the floor laughing - still funny stuff...and without cursing and racist comments.

Bob Elliott was the father of Chris Elliott, another comedian although HIGHLY overrated and quite boring.

When my brother and I were young, my parents had something like 5 volumes of cassette tapes of Bob and Ray shows that we would listen to in the car on long drives. There are so many little things from those shows that carried over for us in casual family conversation. I can’t even start to list them. Very funny.

So much great stuff.

I think my favorite was "The Truffle Hunter", where the guy takes wild boars into Central Park on a leash to sniff out truffles on the roots of oak trees.

"Don't you think it's a little unfair to keep a pack of wild boars penned up in one small room of a New York City apartment?"

(angry retort): "What do you care how I take care of my wild boars?!?"

Bob and Ray use a comedy style that is popular in the UK - Pushing “dull” to the point it becomes hilarious. Your mind almost finishes the joke before they get there but you still hang on just to see how the comedians get there.

The Pythons did this as did so many other British comedians. Few, in the US, did it as well as B&R tho. Masterful comedians!!!

“Write if you get work, meanwhile, hang by your thumbs”

Made me laugh. I’ve used this for many years as my closing line when writing my brother and sister. We were big fans of Bob and Ray in their radio days.
