Trump Calls NAFTA A "Disaster" Trump on trade: The Republican presidential candidate calls NAFTA a disaster he will either break or renegotiate if he's elected president

Donald Trump wants to rip up the North American Free Trade Agreement as one of his strategies for creating new jobs for the middle class. The Republican presidential candidate tells Scott Pelley the free trade agreement between Mexico, Canada and the U.S. is a "disaster." He says he will either break or renegotiate it so he can enact tariffs that would dissuade manufacturers like Ford from building cars elsewhere that are meant for the U.S. market.

The Trump interview, in which he also tells Pelley his plans on immigration and reveals a major part of his tax platform for the first time, will be broadcast on the 48th season premiere of 60 Minutes, Sunday September 27 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

A disaster. Rip it up or renegotiate.

Is that specific enough for the mindless media?

Just lost my vote. Tariffs lower everybody’s standard of living, except for a handful of privileged union thugs who benefit from higher prices.

Really? You weren’t a supporter to begin with. NAFTA only helps Mexico - not us.

It’s not the business of the government to tell me what countries I should buy from. I wonder why so many Freepers believe that it is. A tax on imports is a tax on American consumers.

Well, he might want to explain (a) what he thinks is disastrous about it, and (b) how he intends to renegotiate a FREE TRADE agreement in a way that would allow him to impose punitive sanctions (which just happens to be the opposite of free trade).

You probably were never for Trump, so there was no vote to lose. If you are pro-NAFTA, fine, but whenever I see “just lost my vote” the vote was usually never there in the first place. Trump has been anti-NAFTA all along,. This is not new.

Yes!!
It's about time someone started condemning these phony "trade deals." Terminate NAFTA and get the America out of all of those world trade groups where the America is being used and looted.

Tariffs raise prices at home. This only benefits a few at the expense of everyone else. The way to compete internationally is to get rid of taxes, regulations, and unions.

Liberty, not taxes!

Why don’t you? Why should I have to Mexico to buy from Mexico?

YES!!! How any limited-government conservative could possibly support Trump's trade policy is beyond me. My money is my money, and Ford's factories are Ford's factories. It's none of the government's d*mn business where I spend my money or where Ford builds its factories.

And also, it misses the point that when Ford (or any other manufacturer) builds a plant in Mexico (or elsewhere), they do so because it is cheaper to manufacture there than here. Adding a punitive tariff does not change that. So, either Ford is going to still build the plant there (in which case the price of Fords will increase by the amount of the tariff), or they will build the plant here, and the price of Fords will increase to account for the added cost of manufacturing here. Either way, prices rise.

Agreed.

Trump should rip of the agreement...and then do nothing.

A disaster. Rip it up or renegotiate.

It is not possible to "rip up" NAFTA.

Like it or not, NAFTA is a law, passed by both houses of Congress. It would take a majority of both houses of Congress to repeal it.

This is insane. It is the same thing with Trump's B.S. about putting a 35% tariff on vehicles built in Mexico. Not only would this violate the existing law (NAFTA), but only Congress has the power to implement a tariff.

Trump is either anti-Constitutional, or ignorant of the Constitution.

We had enough of this rule by executive fiat with Obama. We need to get back to the rule of law.
