Historical Crop Circles, Before People Knew What ‘Crop Circles’ Were

In the July 29, 1880 edition of the journal Nature, John Rand Capron published an article titled “Storm Effects,” that described crop circles in detail.

Part of his description reads: “These all presented much the same character, viz., a few standing stalks as a centre, some prostrate stalks with their heads arranged pretty evenly in a direction forming a circle round the centre, and outside these a circular wall of stalks which had not suffered.”

He wondered if these were caused by “cyclonic wind action.” He noted, “The storms about this part of Surrey have been lately local and violent.”

Henry VIII’s Court Celebrates Crop Circles With a Dance?

John Leyland, a chronicler of King Henry VIII’s court wrote of traditional English maypole dance: “We go out in the early hours and we learn the patterns that appear on the grass overnight.”

We used to make them in the alfalfa fields back in 1956 New Mexico. That is, until the owner complained to dad.

Nothing mysterious about them.

I still think the best comment on crop circles was by the man and woman from rural England, who said, in extremely rustic accents: “We think they’re extraterrestrials.”

Some are easily explained as I too made some and got the switch. Others are far to complex to be made by humans with boards and rope. There is other evidence that these are not and cannot be man made.

They could have been caused by a very large dog getting ready to go to the bathroom.

I see your point.

Good forensic investigation should reveal foot prints. Even in the fall at harvest time, when I walk in a corn or wheat field, the soil between the plants is still loose enough to leave a very recognizable foot print. Also the boards should leave occasional marks in the soil.

But the big one is they have to get from the edge to the middle of the field thereby leaving a foot print trail, that’s where foot prints should be easily found.

The article within that link, “One Woman’s Arduous Journey, etc” is really mind-blowing, when you see the complexity of the designs she has photographed in England, assuming they are verifiable. Not just your granddad’s circles — these are like precise digital images in a variety of patterns.

I’m guessing that it is (or some are) due to something like ball lightening. With the electrical fields concentrating in certain areas (like England) due to the geology (faults, magnetic materials, etc.) Others seem way too complex for that - however, snowflakes also make some pretty complex shapes and designs.

I seem to recall videos of a ball of light chasing around a field at night and then a crop circle the following day. I think with all of the hoaxes nowadays it takes some effort to figure out the hoaxes (crushed crops) versus real ones (bent crops, super-heated with nodes exploding, etc.)

I am unsure where I stand on crop circles.

On one hand, there is no doubt some are so huge and complex, that no human could make them with such precision. I mean don’t any of these farmers have barking dogs?
Where are the interrupted crop circles?

On the other hand, aren’t there any of these in regular fields of grass or whatever without tracks?

So I am still on the fence when it comes to CC’s.

if you go into the various links on her site and watch some of the videos, you do see her present the type of phenomena you describe. I don't know what to make of this, being a Christian — I rely on the Holy Spirit for direction. But as someone originally trained in design who went on to work in scenario development for a global IT company, I am quite interested by this, which I was not expecting to see on FR. God does move in mysterious ways. Just this morning I was thinking of a party I attended years ago where we cracked each other up joking about "crap circles", and lo and behold, today this article popped up here of all places.

The people who frequent some of the ET phenomenology groups appear to be mostly New Agers who do not believe in Christ, so I'm wary of that. But then again, few people really do believe; and very few have an accurate sense of the scale of the universe(s) over which the Triune God has dominion.

Agreed. See my post 12. A lot of the things people find to be eerie and think are supernatural turn out to have a disenchantingly ordinary explanation.

Regarding God and E.T.s - I tell my kids if God wanted to make other life forms I’m guessing He could. I think the physics behind space travel though would make it unlikely that we get visited. But who knows. Former Freeper Quix had some good points that “aliens” are really demonic entities. Could be.

Whether talking about astrophysics or spiritual things or extra dimensions, I’m pretty sure we don’t know 1/100th of what there is to know!
