Oh! The have such beautiful eyes!

So what if they have eaten everything that is green and now starve, never shoot Bambi or her kin, ever, no matter what!

Car wrecks? Too many cars already!

I’ve hit 3 of them myself over about 20 years.

Its a Michigan road hazard.

I hit one in North Carolina. I can’t believe that the states haven’t been sued by the auto insurance company for incompetence. They put big restrictions on hunting and do nothing about the deer population and the auto insurance companies are getting slammed year after year with claims. It is a travesty that the states are ignoring this worsening problem.

I was driving at night in rural Florida. Suddenly a deer leapt out and was hit by a truck in front of me. The truck in front of that one and the one behind it pulled over instantly. As I passed the drivers were all racing toward the deer. In the lead truck a guy was pulling out a chainsaw. Nothing goes to waste here. My neighbor, a woman, regularly stops to inspect dead deer. If there are no flies on it, it’s heading home in her trunk.

We drove through northern Michigan last year and I was shocked at the number of dead deer on the side of the road, in various stages of decomposition.

Cows have nice eyes, and chickens are cute when they’re tame as well. Our family hunts and deer are plentiful, so we have no problem turning them into food.

Car wrecks hurt people - better to thin the deer population.

They are everywhere here in Fairfield Country, CT. Already had some close calls. They are especially active around dawn and for a couple hours after dusk.

I know the numbers are up because people don't go deer hunting like they used to. Almost everybody I see out there during hunting season are over 40 years old. Very few young people go hunting these days.

I got hit by a flying deer here in Washington.
It bounced off another Truck.
The meat looked a bit tainted to me so I passed, but the truck driver took it home. I told him he had dibs as the launch vehicle.
My old S10 pickup was easy to find a fender and hood and grill for so I made no claim. I even found them in the right color for $200 on craigslist.
I tend to scan back and forth a little further on the road now.

I have had some close calls (just clipping the deer a couple times), but it took a bit over 40 years of driving before one charged out of the ditch after sunset and ended up hitting the left headlight, sliding across the hood, then sailing over my right outside mirror. How he managed to get up and limp off into the weeds I'll never know, but he did it.

We had to replace all the front sheetmetal/fascia/lights/grille/windshield, but luckily the antlered idiot had enough momentum going crosswise that he didn't cave in the windshield and mess up me or my passenger.

From what I've seen so far this year, when the farmers start stirring the critters up during harvest, there are going to be some body shops keeping busy.

Yep, I avoid driving on 2 lane highways at night because of deer or worse, cows.

Have a cousin that years ago totaled his almost new Datsun 280Z when he ran into a cow on the road.

I could hit one every time I leave or arrive at my house if I drive fast enough. I have more deer than jack rabbits.

Safety rule of thumb for deer crossing into your path while driving:

Just hit the damn thing!

The stories are legion of those who tried to avoid hitting the deer and they ended up dead.

Double ping to SJackson for the outdoor list and to th Wisconsin list where deer and cars seem to be drawn together - even in the city.

We have found that deer whistles (available at your local auto parts store for about $5 per pair) are very effective. Just glue them on your grill and watch the deer run AWAY from you. Also wild turkeys, racoons, etc. We acquired our first pair on a used car we bough that had been brought into Wisconsin from Indiana. We fitted our other cars and haven’t had an animal/car collision since. Prior to that, my husband had done thousands of $$$ worth of damage to his car.

FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.

And I just started riding a motorcycle again, too. The roads that would normally be fun to zip through, leaning through the curves, now I’m riding slow, watching for some kamakazee bambi to harsh my ride.

I used to watch for deer near the roads but now it is the hogs that can destroy your vehicle and possibly kill you. I’ll take the deer any day.

I swear the following is true; I witnessed it.

A doe and a fawn were standing alongside HWY US30 just north of Columbia City when the doe, after looking both ways, crossed the highway between cars. She waited on the side of the road until the fawn had looked both directions, waited until cars were passed, then the youngster darted across the two-lane road and joined its mother.
