Escaped tiger recaptured in old Detroit factory

DETROIT, - Police in Detroit confirmed a tiger was on the loose in a disused plant on the east side of the city and it has now been recaptured.

Detroit police said the tiger escaped from a British film crew Monday while they were shooting footage inside the old Packard Plant and the crew was unable to recapture the big cat.

Representatives of the plant's owners said the film crew had permission to shoot inside the building, but not to bring wild animals. They said the crew brought the tiger along with a bobcat and a wolf without informing officials.

Andy Didorosi said in a series of Facebook posts he was summoned to the plant to assist with the tiger's capture.

A video shared by Didorosi shows a man attempting to scare the tiger into going down a flight of stairs to be recaptured.

"This feels like the dumbest thing we've ever done," one of the men says in the footage.

The man is seen running at the tiger with a tarp and a weed whacker with various attachments in an attempt to get the tiger to vacate a landing on the stairs and go to where other people are waiting to capture it.

The tiger is unfazed by the tarp and appears annoyed by the weed whacker, batting a paw at the tool. Packard Plant security confirmed the tiger was safely recaptured early Monday afternoon.

"Remember, no talking near the tiger." Or: When your friend calls and says he needs help getting a tiger out of a staircase, you listen. (I just happened to be the closest dumb person to the scene. The real crime here is that I used vertical video, apologies to the world.)

Punchline from the old joke. “What do you think he kept slipping on?”

Remember this incident...

A female Siberian tiger killed in a hail of police gunfire after fatally mauling a man at the San Francisco Zoo on Christmas Day 2007 likely was provoked into leaping and clawing out of its enclosure, a federal investigator said in documents obtained by The Associated Press.

The tiger named Tatiana killed 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr. and injured his friends, brothers Paul and Kulbir Dhaliwal, leaving claw marks etched in the asphalt and claw fragments in the bushes outside its pen. Claw marks were also discovered near the top of the enclosure wall, which was lower than federal safety standards dictate, showing that the big cat was able to get enough leverage to pull itself out.

“It appears the tiger was able to jump from the bottom of the dry moat to the top of the wall, and gain enough purchase over the top to pull herself out over the moat wall,” wrote Laurie Gage, a tiger expert who investigated the scene for the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, which oversees the nation’s zoos.

[snip]

After a kill, I find it interesting the tiger would leave a kill to go after something else unless there were a compelling reason,” Gage wrote. “The tiger passed exhibits with warthogs, which it ignored as it followed (the blood trail?) of the two brothers to the Terrace Cafe outside the dining area.”

Anyone who has ever read one of Jim Corbett's books about his adventures hunting man-eating tigers in India would not find that surprising at all.

Love love love them.

But when the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger; Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage; Then lend the eye a terrible aspect...

Michael Jackson's tiger dies of lung cancer
AP via YahooNews ^ | June 28, 2012 | SUE MANNING

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Thriller, a tiger that belonged to Michael Jackson when the entertainer lived at his Neverland ranch, has died of lung cancer at actress-activist Tippi Hedren's wildlife preserve in California.

The 13-year-old, 375-pound tiger died June 11, Hedren said Wednesday. A necropsy was performed and the tiger was cremated. Staff workers will hold a private service when the ashes are buried in a section of the preserve set aside for animals that die there.

Thriller and her brother Sabu were born on Nov. 20, 1998, and lived with Jackson until May 4, 2006, Hedren said.

In a remotely related story....

"The Daily Caller noted that in President Obama’s best-selling memoir, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance, the president recalls being fed dog meat as a young boy in Indonesia with his stepfather, Lolo Soetoro.

“With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chill peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy),” the president wrote. “Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths.

He explained that a man took on the powers of whatever he ate: One day soon, he promised, he would bring home a piece of tiger meat for us to share.”"

I love tigers...all big cats...and the not so big cats too. I think it’s a tragedy when man, in his infinite stupidity, invades their space, or provokes these magnificent creatures into confrontations where the cat is “destroyed” or put down...man is to blame, not the cat.
