AT&T revamping data plans with fewer options at better rates starting tomorrow
9 to 5 Mac ^ | August 14, 2015 | By Zac Hall

Starting tomorrow, AT&T will be revamping its Mobile Share Value plans by adjusting data tiers and plan prices for new and current subscribers. At the low end, AT&T is consolidating a few data tiers into just two options with different price points. Meanwhile, AT&T’s double digit data tiers are also being reduced, and some subscribers can potentially end up with more data at no extra cost per month or get a better rate on even higher data tiers.

While AT&T’s 300MB option for $20/month remains unchanged (and not recommended), the carrier is consolidating single digit data tiers from three options down to just two. Mobile Share Value currently offers 1 GB for $25/month, 3GB for $40/month, and 6GB for $70/month, but starting tomorrow that simplifies to 2GB for $30/month and 5GB for $50/month. Not major changes here, but you could potentially drop or jump to a better suited tier for a better deal or to save some money.

For subscribers needing more data (this is where I fall), AT&T’s refreshed Mobile Share Value plans can offer more data at the same rate, or even more data at a better rate than old plans. Today, AT&T offers 10GB for $100/month and 15GB for $130/month, but starting tomorrow AT&T will remove the 10GB tier and offer 15GB at its $100/month rate. Subscribers looking for even more data will find the current 20GB data for $150/month drops to $140/month tomorrow.

Also starting tomorrow, AT&T’s 15GB and 20GB tiers will include unlimited talk and text to Mexico and Canada, competing with T-Mobile’s recent ‘Mobile without Borders’ feature. Other perks for higher tiers include $15/month access fees for AT&T Next phones versus the $25/month rate at tiers below 15GB. The carrier notes that it will continue to offer data at 25GB, 30GB, 40GB, and 50GB as well.

Subscribers using today’s data tiers and rates won’t see any change, of course, but current and new subscribers can access the new plans and rates starting tomorrow so you’ll want to change your plan, especially if you’re a 10GB subscriber, to take advantage of the better deal.

I have 3 gb with roll over along with unlimited text and voice for $60.
When they say $40 in the article it means $65 with the voice plan included.
Before they subsidized I-phones and don’t do that anymore, so add $800 to the next plan as well.

All iPhone and Android Phone Freepers on AT&T should call tomorrow and change your plans. . . you'll save money and get more bandwidth. If you don't they will keep you on your current plan at the old rates. See the article for the new rates and how much you can save. — PING!

Ping to dayglored and Shadow Ace for your ping lists. . . also for our potential new Android Ping list hosted by volunteer ThunderSleeps!

AT&T reduces cellular rates
plus increases bandwidth for data!

If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.

I'd check with them. . . it may or it may not. I don't know.

I guess competition is having an effect on them after all.

I wonder if this has to do with Verizon’s recently announced changes on the way?

What's the charge for "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" email hosting for high government officials?

You know, the "Friends and Foster" plan...?

It is and for sure they also stopped all phones from being included in two year plans. Those two year plans are GONE along with cheaper phones.

So lets review.

We are now having to pay all of the phones ourselves and they left the prices higher for service than they did when those plans used to subsidize phones.
Same for Verizon as well.

I have Straighttalk - $45/mo unlimited everything (though they reduce the data speed after 3gigs). It’s prepaid, no contract and bring your own phone.

And they use AT&T towers, so it’s the same coverage.

I bought the unlimited data plan years ago when it was offered, and I still have it.

I switched to Ting about a year ago. Since I don't do much texting or talking, it's nice to pay only for what you use. But, if you need more data, texts, or minutes, it's available at reasonable rates.

My bill usually is around $30 a month for two phones.

Maybe I’m not following what you’re saying. You’ve always been able to get a lower monthly rate if you buy the phone outright. The plans where you got a “free” phone charged a certain amount more per month to pay for the phone. You ended up paying about double for the phone than just buying it outright, but didn’t have to plunk down a few hundred bucks up front. We don’t need or want a new phone every two years and started buying our phones up front through Amazon several years back and getting a better price. And then a slightly lower monthly rate on our AT&T bill.

Same here. I'm paying under $30/month for unlimited data. My wife was on me to get the limited plan at $15, but I said why, the limited plans always go up. And they did, beyond what I'm paying.

I have an iPhone, but I don’t use any data. I still have to pay $20 per month for a data plan. Can I drop the the data plan now?

They don’t subsidize iPhone’s anymore?

Wow, I wonder if that will impact people’s purchases.

I know that I bought my iPone for $200 but there’s no way I would have spent $800.

They never really “subsidized” your iPhones or anyone else’s iPhones. The cost of the iPhones was simply factored into the monthly cost of the service and the length of the contracts. It was YOU paying full freight for your iPhones over the length of your contract.

There are no free lunches or free iPhones. There are free “Obama Phones” for some, but they are not iPhones of course.

I suspect that this new approach will actually save families such as mine money long term as we keep our iPhones far longer than 2 years. We of course go through a “hand me down” process where the kids get older phones in the plan transferred to them when Mom & Dad update. So I welcome this. Of course, we’ll have to analyze how best to handle this for our particular situation. No solution is the right solution for everybody or for every situation.

WWLD? AT&T has the worst coverage around here. Verizon or HAM is the way to go.
