6 Things I Wish I Had Never Told My Children
Huffington Post ^ | July 27, 2015 | Tina Plantamura

> Snip <

1. You don't owe anyone anything.

You have one major responsibility: to be part of the positive change in this world. If you are not part of it, you are opposing it. You owe everyone (including yourself) a measure of kindness, mercy, patience, respect and empathy. Everyone is fighting some sort of battle. Everyone has a chapter in their lives that they do not want to read aloud. You might have stepped right into the middle of someone's toughest battle, so while they are struggling to keep it together, if nothing else, all you have to do is be kind. How hard is that?

2. Respect is earned, not given freely.

This is similar to the "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" argument, but more ridiculous. Should you wait for someone to earn your respect before you respect them? Should you assume no one respects you until you have clearly earned their respect? Can you get respect without giving it? Can you give respect and just automatically assume you'll earn it? If you don't earn someone's respect, should you be disrespectful to them? You are responsible for the way you conduct yourself, regardless of whether anyone else is respectful. So please, be respectful.

3. Just be yourself, and people will know how talented/qualified/desirable you are!

Too many other logical statements make this one seem absurd: Step out of your comfort zone. Make your presence known. Know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em. If you don't ask, the answer will always be "no." Persistence, humility, and deliberate effort will help you shine and move toward the direction of becoming a productive human.

“Should you wait for someone to earn your respect before you respect them?”

If they haven’t earned your respect, then whatever you are showing them isn’t really respect.

“You have one major responsibility: to be part of the positive change in this world.”

Fight Statism. Spread the Gospel.

What kind of self-absorbed person tells their child “You don’t owe anyone anything”?

Good grief!

I regret getting angry and speaking sharply more than anything else. I’ve based what I try to teach them on the Word of God, nothing to regret there.

"Should you wait for someone to earn your respect before you respect them?”

You should treat everyone in the way you would like to be treated, in the absence of an awfully good reason not to. This implies a presumption that the other person is respectable, if you have no evidence otherwise.

Good point.

I think there’re actually two different types of “respect” at play here.

They do protect everyone else.

A basic level of human respect, treating others civillay, is not the same respect as earning respect for consistently performing and exceeding standards n your job. ie earning respect through your track record, or not just talking the talk but walking the walk.

This is a common misconception, confusing courtesy with respect...courtesy is something that should be given to every human being, regardless...respect, however, is something that must be earned.

Once I was arguing with a lib (I know, I know); she told me that everyone deserved respect, because there was at least one good thing about them. So I replied, 'well, Hitler really loved dogs, so I guess he wasn't all bad.'...the mouth-dropped-open look on her face was priceless!

I’ll go with what my Parent’s told me.

1. Nobody owes you a living. (My Dad’s addendum to me as a whining Teenager, so shut up and get back to work)

2. You help People who CAN’T help themselves, not People who WON’T help themselves. (They didn’t mean the Government)

3. There will always be someone better off than you and there will always be someone worse off than you, that’s Life.

4. Work hard, Save your Money and Sacrifice when you’re Young so you won’t need to do the same when you’re Old.

I agree. Unfortunately, we use the same word for "I know about qualities and actions of this person which I really admire," and "I treat everyone nicely because I'm a decent person."

There's a similar problem in using the word "pride": to be proud of a worthwhile accomplishment is categorically different from being proud of (for example) being American, but we use the same word.

Then: "Go Cut Me A Good Switch!"

Now: "Let's Talk About How Angry We Make You".

"And Don't Call Protective Services."
