A Lafayette woman is working to raise awareness about gun safety after an accidental shooting claimed the life of her friend and star Northside High basketball player Jo'Nathan Delacroix.

"He was like a little brother to me, especially when we were growing up." Morgane Prejean said.

Lafayette police have said Delacroix and another Northside High student, Anthony Beloney, were handling what they thought was an unloaded gun last weekend, when it went off, fatally wounding Delacroix. Beloney has been arrested on a count of negligent homicide.

News of Delacroix's death devastated Prejean. She has decided to use the tragedy as a way to raise awareness on gun safety through posters.

"I never lost a friend before so this is all new to me," Prejean said. "This is just my grieving process and I'm going to do as much as I can for Jo'Nathan. I'm making sure that his memory lives on."

With messages like "Guns are not toys," Prejean said she hopes many people across Acadiana will think twice before pulling a trigger. She plans to place the posters in neighborhoods and schools across Acadiana.

"Maybe I'll inspire somebody to get rid of their gun and maybe save a life that they would of took with that gun," Prejean said. "Hopefully people will understand that this is not a toy and have a wake-up call from this."

She created a gofundme account that has now raised more than $4,000 to help pay for Delacroix's funeral expenses.

Accidents will happen when people are not educated about handling anything that could cause harm. That goes for a bottle of CLOROX just as well as a firearm.

What a moron.
As if we keep guns because we think they are toys.
Just can’t fix that kind of stupid.

I’m pretty sure it didn’t just “go off”. Someone didn’t keep their booger hook off the bang switch while playing gangster.

Where did said gun come from?
Being that they are not charging anyone for negligence in the ownership of the firearm, I’m gonna guess these two nimrods got it illegally.
So taking someones legally owned gun, with which I trained my kid not to shoot herself, or anyone else, makes perfect sense.
Yeah...right.

handling what they thought was an unloaded gun last weekend

You never think a gun is unloaded. You verify a gun is unloaded.

I have a half dozen firearms in my closet that I know without a doubt in my mind are unloaded. Yet the first thing I do when I pick one up is point it in a safe direction while I open the action and visually inspect the breech.

That's how you avoid accidents. An unloaded firearm will never hurt anyone unless you knock them over the head with it.

If the kids had been trained in the use of guns, this would probably not have happened. The first rule in gun safety is "The gun is always to be considered loaded" and the only exception to that is if you have JUST deliberately cleared the gun of all cartridges in the magazine and in the chamber(s).

This is pretty good on the black community’s healthy position on guns:

I can sure respect the "not a toy" lesson.

Is she going to press to get rid of bleach, anti-freeze, and Drano too? Or just "guns"?

False flag bull$hit and mamufactured story. First of all, “real” gun owners...you know, the conservative types who are used to handling guns and know how to use them:

1) don’t play with guns especially inside of their homes
2) treat all guns as if they’re loaded
3) never point them at anyone unless its intentional
4) don’t pull triggers without checking the chamber first and making sure the magazine is out of the weapon

BS story to advance an agenda. Give it a few days and it will come out once they start checking into it...

I know at least one incident (alcohol was involved) by a real gun owner, killed a good friend while playing a prank.

Maybe knew how to handle a gun (when sober), but due to familiarity and experience, "got casual" with death as a consequence.

She has decided to use the tragedy

I wish people would stop "using" tragedies.

"Never let a crisis go to waste" and all that is poisonous.

Idiots can kill themselves with anything, not just guns.

Idiots in cars kill more than guns. Pools/water kill more than accidental gun deaths.

Doctors and nurses kill more people each year than guns do. Iatrogenic deaths.

Well there ya go. Obviously a liberal was involved who didn’t understand why its a very bad idea to drink and handle guns. It seems to be primarily liberals that keep shooting up the place and half of ‘em are on psychotropic drugs while the others seem to be mental without any help from any drugs.
