A teaspoon of sugar: Many college kids are depending on sugar daddies to pay for their tuition

NEARLY three-quarters of the graduates now leaving America’s colleges are saddled with debt. On average, they owe $35,051. By comparison, roughly half of all graduates carried debt in 1995 and it averaged less than a third as much, says Edvisors, which tracks student aid (see chart).

As the cost of university has risen, so has the number of “sugar babies” who pay for it by selling companionship and sex to wealthy older men. Monthly pay for this is typically about $3,000, though some “sugar daddies” offer much more. According to SeekingArrangement, a firm based in Las Vegas, two-thirds of sugar-baby graduates have no student debt.

Students who post profiles on SeekingArrangement.com know what they want, so “it’s almost like a business partnership”, says Angela Bermudo, a spokesman for the company. The site hosts some 900,000 profiles of sugar babies enrolled in American universities, up from 458,000 two years ago.

Their ranks swelled during the recession and are still growing fast, says Brandon Wade, the site’s founder. A year ago nearly 1,200 students with an e-mail account belonging to an American university posted a profile on the site every day; the daily average has risen to about 2,000. The site has even stopped advertising online. Its ads used to pop up with search results for terms such as “student loan”.

The boom is fuelled by increased acceptance of “sugaring” (dating for money), says Steven Pasternack, the owner of a Miami firm known as Sugardaddie. The company’s site gets more than 5,000 new profile uploads worldwide every day. A quarter are students.

Prostitution is as old as the hills. Whether it's for groceries or college, the transaction parameters are the same.

The only reason this is news is that someone is gunning for debt forgiveness to spare these women the cost of their schooling.

What makes you think these are all female students they’re talking about? And they’re idiots. Many schools are very low cost or next to nothing and if I recall correctly, college in Germany and elsewhere is free!

People have an enormous capacity for rationalization.

Here’s what the sugar daddy connection proprietors of website SeekingArrangement puts it :

” A sugar daddy doesn’t want his sugar baby to leave, whereas no client of a prostitute “wants the hooker to stick around”. This argument has prevailed in America’s courts. If a relationship exists, payment can be labelled as compensation for companionship, not sex.”

Divorce is unfriendly to men financially. Yet the divorce rate is about 50%.

Not a big deal. I was a driver for an escort service back at university and a good number of the girls were college students. You could say I was Uber for escorts. I never felt pity about the girls as they were not drugged or coerced: they did it freely AND they lived in expensive condos and townhouses.

RE: college in Germany and elsewhere is free!

Nothing is “free”. It was paid for by German tax payers.

Now you know why more women than men are getting college degrees.

I know two women who when they were underage babysitters, seduced and blackmailed their wealthy employers for their college tuition.

Being a woman is a business unto itself.

I meant “free” to the student, of course. Canadian colleges are pretty low cost, from what I hear. I almost completely “tested-out” for my degree, which was very inexpensive.

RE: I never felt pity about the girls as they were not drugged or coerced: they did it freely AND they lived in expensive condos and townhouses.

Just curious, were these simply to escort men for functions? Or was there some longer term relationships involved?

And if so, what happens to the relationship after graduation and the girls find jobs?

Do the sugar daddies then go on to the next girl?

RE: Now you know why more women than men are getting college degrees.

If you saw the movies — Sunset Blvd and Breakfast at Tiffany’s, you would understand that some Sugar mommies take breakups more seriously than sugar daddies do.

“Do the sugar daddies then go on to the next girl?”

Depends...on how much money/Viagras they have.
