cleaning fluid that had been stored in an empty bottle of wine If it was stored in one of these bottles I can understand why he was confused.

Pungently aromatic bouquet, suggestions of lemon oil with hints of coriander and vanilla, a strange chlorine-like flavor, with a very strong aftertaste.

Chateau Drano. Not known for its flowery bloom and smooth finish.

How could he have drank enough to kill him and not noticed after that first sip?

Lots of cheap wine might as well be cleaning fluid.

If you start to drink something, smell it first, then if it doesn’t smell caustic try a sip. If it doesn’t taste exactly right SPIT IT OUT & pour it out. Do not drink it! Take your time, sip, don’t gulp!

Real genuine rotgut, accept no substitutes!
As for the bar owner, I’d let him off with paying for the man’s family if he drank a similar sip. Having such in a wine bottle where it can be mishandled like it was - STUPID!
Of course these kind of actions are where our sometimes onerous food handling laws come from. Yes, we have cases where (New Jersey) low-end booze is sold in high-end bottles, but still, its not corrosive (much)!

They should bring it to a wine tasting and see if experts can tell the difference
