Whether it's a potential employer, current employer, budding romantic partner, long-time significant other, or someone else in your life, there's a good chance they have or will run a Google search for your name. Do you know everything that they'll find?
The answer could make a difference between a job and the unemployment line, or happily ever after and nights alone. That's why you need to run your own search first.
Search Google for more than mentions
Start with a basic search for your name in quotes, like "Kim Komando, for instance. If you have a more common name, you might need to go through a number of pages to find yourself.
If you aren't finding anything, you can use your name plus modifiers like the city or state you live in, the names of schools you attended, the name of the company you work for, or some other distinguishing characteristic. Run a number of searches and see what turns up.
Afterward, switch over to Google's Image Search at images.google.com and locate any pictures of you. It's much easier to scan hundreds of images quickly than hundreds of links. You might be surprised at the images you find.

As a real person, I have almost no presence on the internet, according to Google. Basically, one site. A very professional site which is controlled by me and intended to be viewed by the world.
Same for me, very boring.
As an employer, I MIGHT run a search on an original name like “Kim Komando”. However, it’s a waste of time to try this with most names because there are few ways to distinguish between 100 “Mark O’Malleys”. Even Kim had to explain that modifiers should be added! Such modifiers can also filter out targeted search results! If I made a hiring decision based on a page one search result that said Mark O’Malley is a crack smoking truther pedophile, then I’d be pretty careless. It’s faster and more accurate to just run criminal/driving records.
Kinda scary.
I did not think I had a common name but was surprised to discover hundreds that shared my first and last name and many with the same middle initial (although no one will have my middle name as it is an obscure family name).
My other me include whites and blacks and many different occupations.
I know of another “me” in the same town as I live and for awhile we shared doctors and pharmacies (which means you really need to make sure they have the correct me).
I once did the google image search on my name and saved images of 30 or so that shared my name, uploaded them to facebook and tagged them all with my/their name.
no pictures of me, no presence on the interweb thingy.
This advice can be taken with a grain of salt by those named Bob Smith.
Doing an image search on Kim Komando is a downright pleasing experience...
There’s a kid with name who is having a much more interesting life, just like all of my facebook friends!!!
My FR page shows up as item number 5
And apparently, I have a Twitter account and I attended a Cubs/Reds game on April 14 that I don’t remember attending. I hope I had a good time.
“When you Google yourself, the saints weep.”
The nice part about a common name, Googling my name results in lots of people, none of which are actually me.
What’s really disconcerting is to google your FReeper name.
If you find something unfavorable/ incorrect what can you do about it?
I do that once in a while and today I came up in wikileaks.. interesting.
It helps that when I was a teenager, I picked a different first name that is completely unrelated to my actual first name. This is the name most know me by. Few know my real first name.
I've decided that when my sons get a little older, I'll let them "rename" themselves as well.
